News/Obit* 14 April 1997  LESTER RIDEOUT

Lester Rideout, a retired high school teacher and former athlete, died of respiratory failure Saturday at the Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was 75.

Mr. Rideout was an industrial arts instructor in the Toledo Public Schools for 33 years until his retirement in 1981. He taught mechanical and architectural drawing, spending 26 years at Waite High School.

Born on a farm in the Oregon area, Mr. Rideout grew up in East Toledo and graduated from Waite in 1941.

He played defensive and offensive tackle on the school's undefeated City League football championship teams of 1939 and 1940. He served as team captain, and received such honors as first-team all-city.

Mr. Rideout was later inducted into the Waite High School Hall of Fame and the Toledo City Athletic Hall of Fame.

He attended Bowling Green State University, before enlisting in the navy for 3GF1*2years, where he served as an electrician in the Pacific theater.

Mr. Rideout returned to Bowling Green State and earned first-team all-Ohio college honors for his football performance in 1947.

He turned down an offer to play for the National Football League as a member of the San Francisco 49ers after his graduation in 1948.

''He received about three or four telegrams from the 49ers ...,'' said his wife, Frances Rideout. ''He decided he didn't want to do that. He wanted to start his career.''

Mr. Rideout married Frances Korhumel in 1950.

In addition to teaching, he coached football at Waite for five years, and for two years at the University of Toledo.

''He was extremely proud of his family, his teaching career, and his football career,'' said Mrs. Rideout.

Mr. Rideout was a skilled cabinet maker and an avid golfer. He was also a long-time fan of the Detroit Tigers baseball team.

Mr. Rideout was a member of the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church for 46 years, the Maumee Elks Club, and the Bowling Green State University Falcon Club and Alumni Association.

He is survived by his wife, Frances; daughters, Leslie Wood and Patricia Rideout; sons, Joseph, Mark, and John Rideout; brother, Kenneth Rideout; and eight grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. tomorrow at the Coyle Funeral Home on South Reynolds Road, where a prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. Funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, followed by a Mass at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church.

The family requests tributes to the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church Building Fund or the charity of the donor's choice.
