News/Obit* 13 April 1911  WAS NEAR THE CENTURY MARK

Mrs. Lena Perky, Mother of Isaac Piper Dies at the Age of 99 Years.

Aunt Lena Perky, for many years a resident of Penn township, died on Sunday, April 9th at the home of her son, Isaac Piper in Dexter. Had Mrs. Perky lived until October 23d next she would have reached the century mark.

She was born in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, moved to Holmes county, Ohio in 1839 and to Penn township this county, in 1875. A few years ago Mr. Piper retired from the farm and he and his mother have since resided in Dexter. The son is now past 74 years of age. In many ways, Mrs. Perky was a remarkable woman and she possessed a charming disposition, that made her company the delight of her loved ones, friends and neighbors. A son by her second marriage, John D. Perky, was the inventor of shredded wheat biscuit and a noted philanthropist and the founder of the Orlead Institute near Baltimore, Md.

Mrs. Perky possessed a remarkably good memory. She could relate some interesting Revolutionary history as she learned it from her grandfather, John Drushel, who served seven years in the war of the Revolution as an aide to Gen. Washington. She took a deep interest in the affairs of the world and was a constant reader and an adept at fine needle work.
