Finis J. Firestone of Melrose and Miss Ethel Wilson of Clovis, were married Thursday evening at 6:30 in the parsonage of the Central Baptist church with the Rev. R. A. Pryor officiating.

Following the ceremony the young couple, with members of their families and friends, enjoyed a short visit in the pastor's home. Mr. and Mrs. Firestone left Friday Morning on a wedding trip that will include Carlsbad and other cities in the southern part of the state.

Mr. and Mrs. Firestone will make their home on the farm near Melrose owned by the groom's parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Firestone of Clovis.

Ethel Firestone, 88, a longtime Roosevelt County resident, died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2001, in Cleburne, Texas, where she had been living with her
daughter for the past two years.

She was born May 14, 1912, in Hobart, Okla., to Lilley and William V. Wilson.

The family moved to the Fields community in 1929. In Clovis on Feb. 18, 1932, she married Finis J. Firestone.

They farmed at Fields until 1943, when they sold the farm and moved to Santa Rosa, Calif., where they owned a dairy.

In 1946, they moved to Melrose and farmed there for a year before coming back to Portales in 1947.

She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. During the 1952-53 school year, she was the matron and Dean of Women at Sandia View Academy, a Seventh Day Adventist school in Albuquerque.

She was a literary evangelist for the church for many years, selling Bibles and books of all types. She was the leading salesperson for the publishing company for a number of years for all of New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Arkansas.

She was always active in the children's division at the church organizing the Bible schools, and other children's activities.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, George Wilson; three sisters, Mabel Gunnels, Amy Prater and Lela Briggs; and by her husband,
F.J. Firestone, who died in 1981.

Survivors include one son, Johnny Firestone of Fort Sumner; one daughter, Mary Alice Gordon of Cleburne, Texas; one sister, Emma Firestone of Keene, Texas; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral services are planned for 2 p.m. Sunday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel.

Burial will follow at Melrose Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Chuck Morgan, Dwight Harriss, Michael Harriss, Bruce Ryberg, Junior Dallas, Joe Lee and Mike Helm.

Honorary pallbearers will be all friends of the family.
