Note*   George emigrated from Southampton Twp., Somerset Co. PA in 1806 along with the Shirer (Shirrar) and Shurtz (Sturtz) families all who had lived in the same general area. He was the first settler on what is now known as the Sturtz Farm in Adamsville, OH. After their marriage, George and Elizabeth moved to Monroe Twp. About 1817 they moved back to Salem Twp and built a cabin in the woods where A.C.Sturtz now lives. Not long after building he moved just across the line into Adams Twp. He built a distillery on his Salem Twp. farm which he operated for a number of years. This was the first still ever built in the county. The whiskey was sold at about two shillings per gallon and it was common to trade a bushel of corn for a gallon of whiskey. Neither the manufacture or use of whiskey in those days was considered dishonorable. Every family had whiskey and it was considered a necessity.

George was a veteran of the War of 1812.

It would appear that George is the brother of John Stoner, both the sons of John and Catherine Stoner of Bedford and Somerset Counties, PA and grandsons of Johannes Steiner and Margaret Weibman, Johannes having arrived in 1746 aboard the Neptune with four brothers. This from the book "Our Stoner family, 1732-1991" compiled by Norris Eugene Stoner. John Sr. and Catherine are buried in the Old Stoner Cemetery in Madison Twp., Muskingum Co., OH.
