In 1938, Mrs. Van Meter married Lt. Col. Donald S. Van Meter, who became the marshal of the court at the Japanese war crimes trial after World War II. ''My father escorted prisoners to the docket and made announcements in the court, among other duties," Mrs. Ahmed said. "He was a career Army officer who had gone to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point."
