| Biography* | From the book "The History of Hamilton County and Chattanooga, Tennessee, Volume 1", By Zella Armstrong Page 474 FREDERICK FERDINAND WIEHL FREDERICK FERDINAND WIEHL, son of Hyacinth Wiehl and Hannah Firestone Wiehl. was born at Zelienople, Pennsylvania, on May 27, 1840, and died in Chattanooga on September 1, 1900. He entered the hardware business in New Castle, Pennsylvania, when he was a youth and worked there for a short time before returning to school. At the age of twenty he entered the Union Army as a private soldier in Company H of the 78th Pennsylvania Regiment of Infantry, 14th Battery Corps, and served throughout the War Between the States. He rose to the rank of Lieutenant and was a gallant officer. He fought in the Battle of Chickamauga. He moved to Chattanooga to reside in 1865 and entered the oil business. Shortly afterwards he formed a partnership with Benjamin Franklin Fritts in the Fritts and Wiehl Wholesale Drug Company, of which he was vice president at the time of his death. He was also president of the Chattanooga Water Company. His activities were always such as would contribute to the welfare and prosperity of the city of Chattanooga. He was for nearly half a century a prominent personage in financial circles. He was president of the Mountain City Club, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and a Mason. He was noted for his philanthropy which was always free from publicity. He was for many years a member of the City Park Commission. In 1888 the Bank of Chattanooga was started by the banking firm of Wiehl, Probasco and Company. He was president of the bank until his death. He married Katherine Foster, daughter of George Dahney Foster and Rachel Rogers Foster. The marriage took place in Chattanooga, January 20, 1869.
