Note*   Peter was born in Berks Co. PA. He can be found there in the Delong's Reformed Church birth and baptism records. His first name is identified there as John following the German naming convention. It might have originally been Johan(n) but John is what was listed. All other records list him as Peter.

From the Delong's Reformed Church, Bowers, Maxatawny Twp. PA.:

John Peter Scheurer son of Valentine and Elizabeth, born August 28, 1788, baptized October 5, 1788. Sponsors: John Peter Scheurer and Elizabeth Hess.

John Peter Scheurer, Peter's namesake may be his grandfather or uncle. There is a Hess family living in the area of Richmond Twp. but do there is no evidence of a relation to the Scheurers. Peter's wife was Elizabeth Bader so it is not her. Possibly Elizabeth Hess might be a friend of Peter's mother from the area around Kirbyville.

Some records stated Peter married Elizabeth Ochobach on 6/22/1841. It appears now that that information is not quite correct. Elizabeth Ochobach is in reality Elizabeth Sandel Achenbach. Records on file show that she had married a man named Christian Achenbach prior to Peter. No record exists for Elizabeth Sandel marrying Peter Shirer and no death record exists for an Elizabeth Ochobach.

Peter is found in the 1830 Census as PETER SHIREY. In the marriage record on 8 Jan. 1811 he is listed as Peter Shiary. C. Spangler, Justice of Peace, performed the ceremony. Catharine Walters, Peter's first wife, is buried at Bethesda Church cemetery in Adams Twp., near the area where they were living at the time of her death. Ione Bradford Supplees Shirer Profile says Peter's family lived a number of years on a farm of 80 acres in the western half of the south-east quarter of Sec. 6 in Highland Twp. and which he sold to David Ramsey on 6 Dec. 1828. The Bureau Of Land Management records states that this land was sold to a Henry Wheller on Dec 1, 1826. If Peter owned the described land for many years, it was not this parcel in Highland Twp. which today is township 2N-5W. His son Alxeander's will states he was born in Washington Twp. It should be noted that Washington Twp. (2N-7W) was part of Highland Twp until it's formation which would make profile correct but misleading. The Walters also lived in what would become Washington Twp. so it makes sense that this is where Peter was living before moving to the Shirer land in Section 25 after the sale of the land. He also owned land in Salem Twp., and several lots in Adamsville Ohio.

It has recently been verified that Peter is indeed buried at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Adams Twp., Muskingum Co., OH. His stone was broken and the top half thrown over the back fence and down the hill. It had been retrieved in 1997 by Doug Kreis who brought the stone back up into the cemetery but as of the spring of 2001 it was no longer there. Doug made notes at the time and the death date he record was 1858 which conflicts with Peter's death in 1862 after he appeared in the 1860 US Census.

I have since retrieved the stone from behind the cemetery and it is in my possession. It is broken but the inscription reads, PETER SHIRER, Died Dec 2 186_, Aged _. The stone is broken through the year and age and the broken piece is lost. The original placement of the stone is next to stones belonging to Elizabetrh Sandel's family. Her sister married a Gerwig and one of the stones belongs to them. The Sandels donated the land for the cemetery. Also it appears now that Peter was a member as three of his and Elizabeth's children were baptized in Zion. There is a space next to Catherine in Bethesda where he may have intended to be buried, but Elizabeth may not have wanted her husband buried next to his first wife.

Many broken stones and footstones can be found behind the cemetery at Zion Lutheran, the result of an effort to clean up the cemetery and replace the fence some 40 years ago. The stones may have been thrown over the hill over an extended period of time but it is known that this cleanup did occur. I am going to see what the cost would be to fix and or replace the stone. The effort is recorded in the idex above as "Grave Resroration." Anyone who would like to contribute should contact me. Frank Shirer has sent some pictures that show where the stone stood in relation to other stones in the cemetery.

When Ione Bradfoird Supplee was compiling the Shirer Profile, she tried to find Peter's Probate records. All the papers had been removed from the packet and were missing. His final account was filed at Probate Court on 13 Dec 1862. A will for a Peter Shiver can be found listed at http://www.sampubco.com/wills/ohmuskingum4.htm2,3,1,4,5
