As a 10-year old, Dover resident Lisa Phillips started hunting with her uncle Richard Lawver and cousin Greg Poole. She waited seven years to shoot her first deer.
Son Matthew didn’t have to wait quite so long. He shot his first deer just this week at the farm of his uncle, John Rainsberger.
At age 10.
But mom isn’t jealous, she’s ecstatic.
“I was tickled to death, I was so excited for him,” Phillips said. “He was grinning from ear to ear.”
Of course, since her initial outing mom has had plenty of time and has shot plenty of deer. She hit her own 4-point buck this week that, along with her son’s doe, found its way to her own processor so that she, Matthew, husband Todd and oldest son Cody could all enjoy the 40-plus pounds of meat.
“I was glad to get a buck this week,” she said. “I don’t get a lot of time out there so it was nice.”
Phillips is one of four daughters born to Ben Shaw of Dover, and she’s the only one who hunts. The self-proclaimed tomboy has never seemed shy of stepping into the forest.
“I always looked up to my uncle so it was easy for me to follow him and start hunting,” Phillips said. “For me, I just enjoy being in the outdoors. It’s peaceful and quiet and I can think out there.”
She also thinks at home where she processes all of the deer she shoots. It’s an arduous process which is much like cleaning a fish. You have to take care of all the excess involved with the deer before extracting the meat to be processed.
“We really enjoy the meat and it’s kind of a satisfaction for us to be able to do it ourselves,” Phillips said.
Phillips works as a courier at Aultman Hospital at Canton, which keeps her from stepping into the wild every day. She said a gun isn’t her first choice for hunting.
“I prefer a bow because it’s more of a challenge,” she said.
But she’s not going to dismiss the buck she shot or the doe her son shot with their guns.
“I am thankful that with the little time we had out there this week, we were able to get a couple of deer,” Phillips said. “It’s been a great week.”
