Note*   Daniel served as a Union Soldier during the Civil War in the 62nd Regiment of the O.V.I. He kept a journal of his time as a soldier. After the war he became a preacher, possibly Methodist then Free Baptist. He served as minister for many churches as they commonly changed ministers often, sometimes yearly. The journal was expanded to inlude his ministry and is now in the posession of Louise J. Shirer, his gggrandaughter.

His home life was very difficult as they had to move their household quite often. At times they had to walk from town to town as they were too poor to own a horse. He served churches in Ohio, Kansas, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

His second wife, Miss Ida McCoy, was also an ordained minister. In 1910, the couple was living with Ida's sister Olive, husband Stanley Mahan and family in Rochester in Beaver Co., PA. Ida was born in Ohio and her parents came from West Virginia.4
