ANNA MAE BAKER 1930-2010 Anna Mae Baker, 80, of Newcomerstown, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at the home of Don "Kraut" and Lisa Baker. She succumbed after a 10-year battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Following her husband Dale's death in 2000, Anna Mae lived with her daughter, Gayla (and late Randy) Miller, and later resided with Don and Lisa. She was blessed to have loving care from family members and special Passport caregivers: Connie Kohl and Cristy Merce.

Born at home in Newcomerstown on July 6, 1930, Anna was the daughter of Harry and Lillie Herbert Rufer. She was always a hard worker. At an early age, she was digging coal for the family fire and milking cows with her sister, Doris (Hahn). She became an accomplished seamstress, fashioning numerous outfits for herself and her children. She canned tasty fruits and vegetables. Leaving home at the age of 14, she lived with the Alfred Heller family, caring for their children. Mrs. Heller taught Anna manners, grace and poise. In high school, she participated in Glee Club, mixed chorus, and Future Homemakers of America. "Babe," as she was nicknamed, was voted "Best Looking" by her class and was selected as Homecoming Queen and Queen of Spring. She graduated from Newcomerstown High School in 1948. Anna Mae also worked as a waitress at the Luncheonette and the Greyhound Post House. Virginia Baker Ames encouraged Anna to write letters to her brother Dale who was stationed in Germany. When he returned stateside, they were married in the Old Post Chapel at Ft. Sill, Okla., on March 12, 1949. During their assignments at Ft. Sill, Ft. Bliss, Texas, Wiesbaden, Germany, and Limestone, Maine, she worked at the PX and as a secretary in the Gunnery and Firing Section, the Office of Special Investigation, and the commissary.

Anna Mae was a faithful member of the Church of Christ, taught Bible classes and enjoyed planning church suppers. She also looked forward to the monthly luncheons with her NHS classmates. Her family appreciates their acts of kindness and patience with Anna Mae as her disease worsened.

Anna and Dale had four children who survive them and they include, Linda (Terry) Myers of Dover, and Don (Lisa) Baker, Gayla Miller, and Shawn (Amy) Baker, all of Newcomerstown; grandchildren, Ryan (Aimee) Myers of Nashville, Tenn., Travis (Kaylynn) Myers of Abilene, Texas, Derek (Angel) Miller of West Lafayette, Monica (Jesse) Wilson of Coshocton, Yvonne Whitman and Nyah and Daleney Baker of Newcomerstown; great-grandchildren, Ethan Myers, Gannon Baker, Mackenzie Carrol, and Alivia, Kaylee, and Connor Miller; a sister, Norma McGarvey of Newcomerstown; and two brothers, Merle "Bud" (Betty) Rufer of Bellevue and Jim Rufer of Mansfield. Anna was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dale Baker; two sisters, Doris Hahn and Celia Porcher; and an infant brother, Floyd Rufer.

Services were Nov. 9, 2010, at the Addy Funeral Home, Newcomerstown. Minister Charles Newell officiated. Burial was in the Birds Run Cemetery, Newcomerstown.

In lieu of flowers, gift donations are requested for Hospice of Coshocton County, P.O. Box 1284, Coshocton, OH 43812; or the Alzheimer's Foundation of America, P.O. Box 96391, Washington D.C. 20090-6391. Online condolences may be made at www.addyfuneralhome.com.1
