William Henry Herbert¹

Note*		It is not clear why William is not in the household in the 1860 census. One source says his birth date is 1861 and it is about that time that his mother died so it is easy to assume she died in childbirth or soon afterward. All census and even William's death certificate give his birth as 1856. It also gives his father's name as Conrad Herbert but no mention of the mother. His census records mostly agree that his mother was born in Ohio but one says she was born in PA and another in Germany. If she died when he was an infant he may not know any details about her which wold result in the records being what they are. There was only one William Hubbard/Herbert in Guernsey Co at the time William was born and also only on Conrad Hubbard/Herbert that could be his father. There is a Wm H Hubbard (4) in 1860 in Dover Twp., Tuscarawas Co. with an Eliza Hubbard (9) in the household of Sarah Horman. There was a John Hubbard who married an Elizabeth Horman in Tusc. Co. but he was of English ancestery. It is possible this Wm. H/ and Eliza are their children and the couple died (one source says they died in Illinois) and her mother or grandmother raised the children. In our case, we have to go by the only record which states William's parents and that is his death certificate that says he is the son of Conrad Herbert.1,3,4
