Driver of car also dies in 100-mph accident

A St. Johns County high school golf champion and his friend were killed Wednesday morning on Roscoe Boulevard in Palm Valley when their car left the road and crashed at more than 100 mph, authorities said.

Darren Patrick Scott, 19, and Jeremy Leon Smith, 21, were pronounced dead at the scene, about 100 yards from Smith's home in northeast St. Johns County, authorities said.

Scott was the 1998 Times-Union Boys Golfer of the Year.

Sheriff's Deputy Sam Williams said Smith was driving south at 3:25 a.m. and ran off the left side of the highway, over-corrected and ran sideways into a ditch. The 1994 Camaro then hit a culvert and flipped into a tree before striking another tree.

Williams said the car broke apart and that Smith was ejected.

"It hit the culvert so hard it rammed the culvert up under the driveway and lifted the driveway," he said. "The motor went to rest in the neighbor's driveway to the south."

Williams said the car hit the first tree 10 feet above ground and that the speedometer was frozen at more than 100 mph.

Neither victim was wearing seat belts, Williams said.

He said blood tests will not be complete for about two weeks. He said he did not know where the Scott and Smith had been before the accident.

The two graduated from Allen D. Nease High School in 1998 and worked together at the new Golf Club at South Hampton in St. Johns County. Earlier in the day they had played at a course in Flagler County.

Scott had been a member of the Nease golf team that won three state golf championships while he was a student.

Scott was the men's club champion at the Champions Club at Julington Creek and shared that title at South Hampton.

He won his first club championship at Julington Creek when he was 15 years old.

Jim Lear, general manager of the Champions Club, said Scott had worked at the golf course in the past.

"Everybody's just in shock," he said. "He'll be missed by a lot of people."

Smith was a linebacker and defensive end in football and a wrestler at the high school, lettering in both sports.

"He loved his athletics," said Smith's father, Leon Smith. "He had a lot of friends."

Mark Tutor, the golf pro at South Hampton, said Scott and Smith helped golfers get ready to play and were good workers.

"They were just both great guys," he said. "They were very good friends."

Both were attending community college, and Scott had hopes of becoming a professional golfer, Tutor said.

In 1999, Scott qualified to play in the second stage of qualifying for the U.S. Open golf tournament.

"He was not only a great guy but he had an extreme amount of talent," Tutor said.
