News/Obit 21 August 2009  Alan Brotemarkle , 82 WW II vet built race cars for sons

Alan Earl Brotemarkle was born March 25, 1927, to Earl and Maude Sarchet Brotemarkle in Kirwin, Kan.

He died at home in Platteville on Aug. 17, 2009, of Multiple Myeloma.

The family moved to Colorado in 1934. Alan attended school in Keenesburg, Platteville, Aims and Colorado State College of Education plus workshops in Des Moines, Denver, Fort Collins - wherever he could improve his skills on machines.

He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific.

He married Dorothy Garrett 61 years ago in New Mexico.

Alan worked for Herren-Strong doing road construction, retired from Farr Farms in 1982 and farmed on the family farm east of Platteville.

Fond of all sports, for 45 years the most time consuming was building and repairing race cars for his sons - first for the drag strip and then on oval dirt tracks.

An award winning trapshooter, he also ran the trap shoot to make money and help build the track for athletics at Valley High School.

Much pleasure was derived by watching sons and grandchildren compete in athletics and Brain Bowl.

A big activity after retirement was worldwide travel to every continent except Antarctica.

He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 6011, National Rifle Assoc. and Platteville Historical Society.

No membership cards - but special one dollar bills were required for Liar's Poker with good friends at local eating establishments.

He is survived by wife, Dorothy and son, Brad, of Platteville; son, Todd and Marcia; grandchildren Blair, Quinn and Aaron Benson of LaSalle; sisters, Sally Miller and husband Raymond of Platteville and Ruth Freauff of LaSalle; and sister-in-law, Diane Brotemarkle of Platteville, brother-in-law Bob and wife Charlene Garrett of Pueblo and sisterin-law June and husband Percy Hiatt of Greeley, along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Bruce Byne.

No services scheduled.

Inurnment at a later date.

As a memorial - when you see a bright shiny vehicle that runs like a top and looks great - Smile - and think of Alan.
