News/Obit* 12 September 1963  Obituary- Gaumer

Aaron Gaumer, son of Chester and Jane Gaumer, was born Nov. 4, 1866 at Linton Mills, Ohio. He was one of eight children, and was the last to go, although a brother, John lived to be 98 and a sister to the age of 90.

His boyhood was spent in his native state. He was married April 23, 1896 at Dover, Ohio, to Mary Ellen Dawson. Their daughter, Alta, was their only child.

In 1905 they came to Kirwin. Two brothers lived in Kansas at the time.

At first he farmed with the Gray-Stagg families, later he helped operate a drug store and other business concerns in Kirwin. Still later he operated his own farm in the community northwest of Kirwin.

He was very capable and dependable in his work. Mr. and Mrs. Gaumer were definately a part of any neighborhood where they lived, respected and loved.

He was fond of the poem "Thanatopsis" and often quoted from it as a pattern for living. After retiring, Mr. and Mrs. Gaumer moved to Kirwin, where they greatly enjoyed their garden and flowers, and their many friends.

The death of their only grandson, Edsel Stuckman, in World War II brought great and lasting sorrow to them.

Mrs. Gaumer passed away April 26, 1953. As the years came on Mr. Gaumer decided to enter a rest home at Phillipsburg. Thus he has gradually passed on the interests of active life to the oblivion of great age. Nearing 97, he has "fought the good fight, and finished his course," and gone to his rest.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Alta and Hugh Stuckman, other relatives and many friends, who have tried everyway to help him live his last days as he wished. He died Sept. 3, 1963, at the Borum Rest Home at Phillipsburg.

These were his favorite verses:

"So live, that when they summons come to join
The innumerable aravan which moves to that mysterious realm,
Where each shall take his chamber in the silent halls of death,
Thou, go not, like the quarry slave, at night scourged to his dungeon, but sustained and soothed by an unfaltering trust, approach thy grave.
Like one who wraps the drapery of his couch about him, and lies down to pleasant dreams."

Memorial services were held on Thursday, Sept. 5, 1963 at the Community Methodist church in Kirwin, Kans., with Rev. J. C. Daniel officiating. Music was furnished by Iola McFadden and Dura Young, accompanied by Marie Stockman.

Casket Bearers were Alfred Willis, Charlie Bogart, Harold Kendall, Bill Clark, Frank Townsend and Russell McFadden. The flower bearers were Hazel Scott and Allie Porter. Interment was in Kirwin, Kans., cemetery.

Card of Thanks

We wish to thank everyone who was so kind during the final illness and death of our father. Your many thoughtful acts and expressions of sympathy were all sincerely appreciated. -- Alta and Hugh Stuckman.
