June 19, 1931 - January 5, 2011

Sioux Falls- The voice of the Harrisburg Tigers fell silent when Charles Cab Benson passed away after a brief but courageous battle with cancer on January 5, 2011.

Cab was born June 19, 1931, to Vera (Sloan) and Clarence A. Benson in Parker, SD. He started his education there and in 1943 moved with his parents to a farm near Harrisburg, SD. He enlisted in the South Dakota Air National Guard in January of 1949. He graduated that same year from Harrisburg High School. He attended SDSU in Brookings, SD until being called to active duty on March 1, 1951, for service during the Korean Conflict.

Cab married his bride of 57 years, Sally Oppold, on April 11, 1953, in St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Tea, SD. They made their home in Sioux Falls, SD later moving to a farm near Lake Alvin, east of Harrisburg, SD.

Cab worked various jobs until March of 1957, when he became a full-time employee of the South Dakota Air National Guard. He retired in February 1984.
Cab enjoyed singing, reading, carpentry, playing cards, golf, joke and storytelling, and trips with the Holy Spirit Church group, Yesterdays Kids. He also enjoyed high school sports, and watching his children and grandchildren participate. He particularly enjoyed football and was part of the Tiger Crew from 1966 to 2007, announcing the games for the last 35 years.

Cab is survived by his wife Sally, Sioux Falls; 3 daughters, Marilee (Jeff) Rollinger, Davis, SD, Melodee (Curt) Kloiber, Sioux Falls, and Teresa (Duane) Fink, Summerset, SD; 3 sons, Kevin (Vickie) Benson, Ft. Collins, CO, Chris (Pam) Benson, Harrisburg, and Collin (Mary) Benson, Harrisburg; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, with 2 more expected this year.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Rae Chamberlin; Raes husband, Earl; and a grandson, Tanner Benson.

He was a very loving and wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. The world has lost one of the most amazing men on this earth. We love you, Dad, and already miss you so much.

Family present visitation will be 4:30-6:30 PM Friday, January 7th at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Rosary followed by Liturgical Wake Service begins at 6:45 PM.
