News/Obit* 25 July 1997  Death: Onas L. Mays

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, Onas Lee Mays, 78, was welcomed back to his heavenly home on July 23, 1997. Onas's health began to deteriorate when he contracted Parkinson's Disease 12 years ago. His life came to a close following a heart attack and stroke. He had the joy of being at home surrounded by his family.

He was born January 23, 1919, in Howe, Idaho, the son of James Elmo and Anna Elisabeth Lindenmann Mays. Onas will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, devotion to his family, and his hard work ethic. He was happiest when on camping or fishing trips with his family, or working outdoors in his garden and yard. His work consisted of farming and carpentry, and for 20 years he worked as a Research Technician for USU. Employers remember him as a loyal and dependable employee who always came early, stayed late and went the extra mile.

He served in the Army Air Corps as a fighter pilot during World War II. After completing 18 months of active duty in Iceland, he served as a flight instructor at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C.

He married Mary E. Quist, September 3, 1942, in Tallahassee, Florida. The marriage was later solemnized in the Logan LDS Temple.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; sons and daughter: Mary Lee (Lloyd) Burton, Roosevelt; Herb (LuAnne) Mays, North Logan; Evelyn (Stuart) Andrew, Trenton; Marjorie Harris, Cedar City; Homer (Bonnie) Mays, Salt Lake City; John (Debbie) Mays, North Logan. He has 23 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Carl (Velma) Mays, The Dalles, Oregon.

He will be deeply missed by all of us.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 26, 1997 in the North Logan Tenth Ward Chapel, 1550 East 1900 North, with Bishop Lynne A. Pettit, conducting. Friends may call Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Cranney Mortuary, 420 East 1800 North in Logan, and at the church Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until time of services. Interment, Hyde Park Cemetery.
