News/Obit* after 29 March 2002  Carl Floyd Mays, a resident of The Dalles, died March 29, 2002, at a care center there, at the age of 91.

Mr. Mays was born Jan. 25, 1911, in Howe, Idaho, the third of four children to James Elma and Anna Elizabeth (Lindeman) Mays. Mr. Mays attended Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho, for two years and graduated from the University of Idaho in Moscow, with a bachelor of science degree in animal husbandry. He was an active student in the university glee club and in college track won in the 880-yard run and in relay races. He returned to the family ranch in Idaho as a partner following his graduation from college.
He and Ruth Elaine Serman were married soon after his return. She died in 1942. In 1943, he married Velma Peck Pope, who had been widowed, and helped raise her two sons, Steven LeRoy and Dennis Lester Pope. He and Velma also had two children of their own, Floyd and Carolyn. Dennis died in a farm accident prior to the family's move to Oregon in 1952.

For 24 years, Carl and Velma worked as partners, raising their family on their 13,000-acre ranch in Central Oregon. Mr. Mays was a loving family man and an active member of the community. He served 15 years on the school board for Southern Wasco County, participated in Maupin school activities and in the booster club. He was president of the Oregon Cattleman's Association and Wasco County Cattleman of the Year in 1967. He received the Trail Boss Honorable Mention Award from the Pacific Northwest American Society of Range Management in 1968. The Mays sold their ranch in 1976 and moved to The Dalles.

Mr. Mays was also an active member of the Kiwanis Club and was their song master. He and his wife were active in the Mid-Columbia Senior Center and they enjoyed their longtime membership in their monthly dance club.

Survivors include his children, Steven Mays of Lake Oswego, Floyd Mays of Cove Creek, Ariz., Carolyn Mays Chase of Portland; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his wife Velma in January 2001, his brothers Emlen and Onas and his sister Wilma.
Graveside services were held April 6, at The Dalles Parklawn Cemetery, followed by a gathering of family and friends at Royal Ann's Restaurant. Arrangements were under the direction of Smith Callaway Chapel. Memorial donations have been suggested to the Mid-Columbia Senior Center, 1112 West 9th St., The Dalles, OR 97058.3

Carl Floyd Mays, 91, a resident of The Dalles, died at a local care center on Friday, March 29, 2002.

He was born January 25, 1911, in Howe, Idaho, the third of four children to James Elmo and Anna Elizabeth (Lindeman) Mays. He attended Idaho State University in Pocatello for two years and graduated from the University of Idaho in Moscow, with a B.S. degree in Animal Husbandry.

He married widow, Velma Peck Pope in 1943, and born to them were Floyd Jimmie and Carolyn. He helped her raise her sons, Steven LeRoy and Dennis Lester Pope. Dennis died in a farm accident prior to the family's move to Oregon, in 1952.
