HEDGES-SHAW, Helen G.

Feb. 21, 1912 - May 27, 2004

Helen Hedges-Shaw, long time Oklahoma City resident, was born in Cashion, Oklahoma to Meryle L. and Jess W. Throckmorton. She graduated from Kingfisher High School and obtained her nursing degree from Enid General Hospital. She practice nursing through her seventieth year, retiring from Mercy Hospital in 1983, where she was charge nurse of Post Coronary Care and was often referred to by patients as the "Angel of Mercy." With her giving and loving nature, Helen continued to serve Mercy as a volunteer after her retirement. Helen was a life long member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and lastly a member of First Christian Church in Oklahoma City where she volunteered preparing food for Meals on Wheels. Helen was predeceased by her husband of forty-nine years, Earl W. Hedges, by her granddaughter, Robin Nicola, and by her siblings, Floyd Throckmorton, Anita Firestone , and Fern Ogan. She is survived by her husband of four years, Charles C. Shaw of Oklahoma City and her daughters, Carol Harris, Tulsa, and Earlene Nicola and husband, James C. of Parachute, Colorado. She is survived by grandchildren Philip and wife Sarah Harris, Cynthia Harris of Tulsa; Kristin Harris, Houston; Renee Nicola, Dallas; and James C. Nicola Jr., Austin. Also surviving are great-grandsons Jackson, Nathaneal, and Robin Wade, and nieces Norma Renier, June Peterson, Gretchen Parsons, and Vernita Anderson. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2004 at 10:30 AM at the Chapel of the Central Christian Church in Enid, Oklahoma. Interment will be in Enid Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, the American Diabetes Association, the American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.5
