KENTON -- John W. Allen, 53, of Myrtle Beach, SC (formerly of Kenton, OH) died on January 11 of complications from cancer. He was born in Bluffton, OH on March 19, 1951. He is survived by his wife Pat ( Mankey ); his daughter Kari Reed; his grandson, Kody Michael Allen Reed; his older siblings William (Ruth-deceased); Belva (Don) Flowers of Wharton; Dwaine of Delaware; Ethel (Charles) Hensel, Huron; Carol (George) Ruhlen of Kenton; Mary (Fred) Rothlisberger of Mt. Blanchard. He is also survived by his father-in-law John "Bud" Mankey , Jr. of Ada; and three brother-in-laws, Steve (Charla) Mankey of Ada, Mike (Richanne) Mankey of Buffalo, NY, and John (Rebecca) Mankey of St. Augustine, FL. Also surviving him are several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Betty (Shepherd) Allen; his sister, Bobbi Jean (John) Miller; and his mother-in-law, Janice (Frederick) Mankey .

John Allen married Pat Mankey on December 5, 1969. He was retired from ArvinMeritor (formerly Rockwell International) in October 2002.

As most know, John was an avid athlete and enjoyed many sports including racquetball and downhill skiing, but most of all, he enjoyed golf.

John was a board member of the Hardin Memorial Park Golf Club in Kenton, a member of the Elks in Kenton, and he also enjoyed many years as the club champion at Memorial Park Golf Club in Kenton.

For the last ten years he has enjoyed being "Pa-Pa" and has spent much time teaching his grandson, Kody, new sports and generally goofing off with him. What John wished most-of-all was for Kody to have the opportunity to attend college. To make John's wish a reality, a trust fund to be used for this purpose has been established at Home Savings and Loan as the John W. Allen Memorial Trust. Details are at the end of the obituary.

During John's two bouts with cancer he was treated by many fine, caring health care professionals. His and his family's thanks go to St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima; Hardin County Cancer Society; Duke Medical Center in Durham, NC; Dr, Dickinson and the Grand Strand Medical Center 1E nursing staff in Myrtle Beach, SC; Rev. Scott Johnson, Kenton; and all those we have forgotten to mention. The Hardin County Cancer Society was very supportive and helped John and his family in many ways that pleasantly surprised the family.

John touched many lives and will be missed terribly. The outpouring of kindness from folks too numerous to mention has overwhelmed the family.

A memorial service will be held on January 29, 2005 at St. John's Church in Kenton, 211 East Carroll Street at 2:00 p.m. Prior to the service, the family will receive visitors beginning at Noon.
