| News/Obit* | 13 May 2003 | COLDWATER - Garford "Gar" J. Showalter , 82, of Coldwater died Monday, May 12, 2003 in Ovid Township, Branch County. Gar was born July 16, 1920 in Hudson, Ind. to Ira and Lottie Showalter . Mr. Showalter owned and operated his own steel hauling business until his retirement in 1986. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. He graduated from Fremont High School in 1941 and joined the U.S. Army where he was awarded two Purple Hearts, being wounded during combat. Returning from service, he moved to Branch County to begin his career in the trucking business. He was a member of the Coldwater Elks #4361; Coldwater Eagles #1907; Life Member of VFW #5319 of Athens; Life Member of AmVet #1988 of Baldwin; Life Member of American Legion Post #257 of Fremont, Ind.; Moose Lodge #2387 of Fremont and the DAV Member of Ens. Robison Chap #15 of Michigan. He married Mary Firestone, who died in 1986, and was then married to Clara Goebel in 1992. Survivors include his wife Clara; a daughter Holli Showalter of Moses Lake, Wash.; step-daughter Sharon Link of Coldwater; step-sons Robert Goebel of Coldwater; Gary McGlugan of Quincy and K.C. McClugan of Hillsdale; nine grandchildren; one great granddaughter; a sister Joyce Southworth of Quincy and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home in Coldwater, followed by Military Honors at 8 p.m. Following cremation, burial will be held at Lester Cemetery in Algansee Township. Memorials may be directed to the American Legion Post #52 Nursing Scholarship Fund or the Moose Heart Fund.
