Fatal Accident At Adamsville
John Jones Killed by the Lighting
and Aged Doctor Decker no
Doubt Fatally Injured

Adamsville, O 10 May The damage by the storm yesterday afternoon is more serious than at first supposed. Beside the death of John Jones it is now thought that Dr Decker's injuries are such as to render his recovery extremely doubtful. Upon the approach of the storms Dr Decker, John Jones, J O Shroyer, Cliff Yeager and James______, took refuge in the barn. Jones leaned up against a post through which an iron rod passed at the top. One of the most blinding strokes of lighting struck the rod and passed down the post. As soon as it came in contact with Jones body he fell to the floor a corpse. His clothing was badly burned and his body bears marks of the firery fluid. Doctor Decker was standing but a short distance from Jones and the lighting first struck him under the left shoulder tearing a hold through his clothing as large as a man's double fist. It passed down inflicting a severe burn in the small of his back and then ran down his leg tearing to fragments the top and heel of his boot where it left his body. The Doctor was removed to the house and medical aid was summoned at once. His body was found to be terribly burned and the course of the lighting can be easily traced by the peculiar blue marks. he has been in an unconscious condition all of today and it is not thought his advanced age will permit his recovery from the shock although his physician express an opposite opinion. The other occupants of the barn were more or less shocked but none seriously injured. They were all blinded by the stroke and it was several minutes before they fully realized what had happened. The barn was but slightly injured. John Jones is a brother-in-law of County Recorder Zimmer. His funeral will take place tomorrow. The terrible accident has cast a gloom over the entire community.

(Appeared in The Zanesville Daily Signal, Zanesville, Ohio Wednesday Morning 11 May 1887.), Principal=Dr. Henry Decker2
