Burial will be in Llano Cemetery by Cox-LaGrone Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Drive. Joe was born April 17, 1930, in Hall County near Memphis to Drew and Marie Smith. He graduated from Goodnight High School, Clarendon Junior College and West Texas State University. He married Scharlean Pyeatt on Oct. 22, 1953, in Clarendon. Joe served in the First Marine Division during the Korean War. He was one of the "Frozen Chosin" who, along with the Army 7th Division, fought their way out of the Chosin Reservoir even though outnumbered almost six to one by the Chinese army. He was discharged from the Marines with the rank of staff sargent. Joe worked for SIC, and the companies who bought it out, for 32 years. He retired in 1987 and took Texas State Technical Institute's bootmaking course, became a bootmaker and made beautiful cowboy boots. He was a "man's man" and a cowboy at heart. He was a man of few words, had a wry sense of humor and loved a good joke. He was devoted to his family and was much loved by them. The family would like to thank two special people, John Higdon and Ted Hennis, for being such good friends over the years. He was preceded in death by a son, Matthew, in 1965; his parents; and his two older brothers, Billy and Charles Smith. Survivors include his wife, Scharlean; a daughter and son-in-law, Melissa and Steve Hinkle of Seminole, Okla.; a son, Jonathan Smith of Austin; two grandsons, Josh Hinkle of Austin and Dace Hinkle and wife Tashina of Seminole; a great-granddaughter, Madison of Seminole; four sisters, Shirley Hawks, Sue Carter, Lou Mayo and husband G.T., all of Amarillo, and Elizabeth Padgett and husband Leo of Lubbock; and a brother, Jimmy Smith of Vernon. He also is survived by three sisters-in-law, Reatha Pyeatt and Jo Nell Pyeatt, both of Amarillo, and Barbara Lee of Florida; and many loving and much loved nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials be to Clarendon College Ranch and Feedlot Program, Attn: Darlene Spier, P.O.
