News/Obit* 19 February 1933  Firestone

Charles J Firestone, great grandson one of the early settlers of DeKalb County, who formerly hailed from Stark County, Ohio; grandson of Samuel K and Caroline Firestone, who because of the loss of his parents at the age of 7 and 12, respectively, became his foster parents; son of George Alfonso and Adeline (Shull) Firestone, came to the light of his earthly existence October 27,1881, near Butler, Indiana and passed the portals of this life on February 4, 1933, at the age of 51 years, three months and seven days.

He obtained his education almost entirely from the Hook District School.

Mr. Firestone enlisted in the regular Army, Company H, 29th Regiment, US Infantry, on January 28, 1902, and served in the Spanish-American war, spending nearly three years in the Philippine Islands. He later went to some pains in an attempt to enter the service of his country during the World War, but because of a wound received during his former service, was rejected. He was honorably discharged January 27, 1905.

Since coming back into private life, he engaged vocationally in railroading for the most part, attaining some degree of success as inspector and chief of inspectors on several systems.

Somewhat less than a year ago, Charles returned to the home community, purchased the old Dan Tombow farmstead southwest of Butler. There he lived with his nine-year-old daughter, Bessie Hazel, until recently through a relapse from a siege of flu he contracted pneumonia, which was the direct cause of his death.

The subject of this sketch was converted when quite young and was active in the program of the United Brethren church near Butler, as also later was he active in church while he homesteaded in New Mexico.

There remain to suffer the sad and untimely death, besides his little Bessie Hazel, one brother, Rev. Samuel M. Firestone of East Sparta, Ohio; one sister, Mrs. Amos Warford, Spencerville, Ind.; five nieces, four nephews, two uncles, Mr. James E Firestone, of Butler, Ind., and Mr. Charles G Shull, Alexandria, Ohio; one aunt Mrs. Adam S Sternberg, of Chicago, besides numerous cousins.
