SHIREY, Ernest L. 77, of Akron, OH, passed away Nov. 23, 2000. He served with the 1st Rangers Btn, CO E, and was taken prisoner at Anzio on Jan. 30, 1944. A member of the North Central Ohio Chapter #8, he is survived by his wife, Helen and one son.

Ernest L. Shirey


    Ernest L. Shirey, 77, passed away Nov. 23, 2000.


    Born in Johnstown, Pa., he lived in Akron since 1940. He worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber, retiring after 48 years of service. He was in the U.S. Army First Ranger Batallion. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 209, 40/8, American Ex-Prisoners of War, and the U.R.W.


    Preceded in death by brothers, Lester, Paul, and Bill; sisters, Gladys and Nellie; survived by wife, Helen; son and daughter-in-law, Kevin L. and Cheryl Shirey of Akron; sister, Florence Stahl of Medina; and many nieces and nephews.


    Graveside service will be Tuesday, 2 p.m. at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, with Deacon Dave Seal officiating. Calling hours will be Monday, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Hennessy Funeral Home, 552 N. Main St., Akron, two blocks north of St. Thomas Hospital, at the corner of York and Main, with an American Ex-P.O.W. service at 5 p.m. (Hennessy Funeral Home, 330-376-3032.)
