Passing Away of One of the Oldest

Women in Muskingum County

Mrs. Esther Shirer one of the oldest women of northern Muskingum, died at 4 o'clock yesterday morning at her home in Adams Township. Mr. Shirer was born 5 December 1807 in Somerset County, Pennsylvania and when two years old she was brought to Muskingum County, where she has since lived. Her home was first in the north part of Washington Township but after residing these fifteen years the family moved to Salem Township where in 1830 she was married to Valentine Shirer of Adams Township. Deceased was a daughter of Daniel and Hannah Gaumer early pioneers of this county and had she lived until the 5th of next December she would have been 90 years old. Mrs. Shirer was an aunt of Hon. D. H. Gaumer of the Signal, a sister of Mr. Gaumer's father. The husband of Mrs. Shirer died in 1881. They were the parents of eleven children eight of whom are living and three are residents of this county. They are Mrs. Armetta Lacy and Mrs. Eliza J. Vensel of Madison Township and Mrs. Samuel W. Sutton of Adams Township. The other children live in Iowa and Kansas. The funeral was held this afternoon at Bethesda M. E. Church of which denomination the deceased was a long and faithful member. Rev. Thomas Wood, the pastor conducted the services. The natural infirmities of old age were the cause of her death.
