CHAFFIN, DOUGLAS E., 81, of Ocean City, on Saturday, May 23, 1998. Born in Mitchell, SD, he had lived in Philadelphia, PA and Washington, DC. He had summered in Ocean City since 1957 before moving here permanently several years ago.

Mr. Chaffin was Assistant Regional Administrator for Housing and Urban Development in Philadelphia before taking a position as Personnel Director with Housing and Urban Development in Washington, DC where he had worked for 25 years before retiring in 1975.

He was a regular contributor to the Atlantic City Press and The Sentinel-Ledger Letters to the Editor, active with local schools and politics and Fairness in Taxes in Ocean City. He also served on the Planning Board and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church both in Ocean City and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

He wrote two books of poetry, "Rhymes and Other Absurdities" and "Verse Too".

Mr. Chaffin and his wife were world wide travelers including trips to Costa Rica, Egypt, Israel, New Zealand, China, Australia, Russia, Italy, Ireland, Singapore, Hong Kong and Greece just to mention a few. The Douglas Chaffin Outstanding Scholar Award at Grinnell College in Grinnell, IA is named for Mr. Chaffin.

Surviving are his wife: Irma O'Neal Chaffin, two daughters: Susan C. Hamilton of San Diego, CA and Patricia C. Mack of Minneapolis, MN; one son: Scott D. Chaffin of Woodbine. Also surviving are a brother: Robert of St. Paul, MN; a sister, Mary Husnik of Great Bear Lake, MN and five grandchildren.

A service of memory and love will be offered Tuesday morning at 11 o'clock from the First Presbyterian Church of Ocean City, 7th Street at Wesley Avenue, Ocean City, where friends may call from half past ten o'clock until time of service.

Burial will be private in Seaside Cemetery, Palermo.

The family suggests those who desire send memorial contributions to the charity of one's choice.
