Jake was an agent for the Santa Fe Railroad. After living in Cimmarron, Kansas for a time he was well established and opened a store with a Mr. Dill. He also acted as a chairman of the board of the county commissioners for Gray Co., Kansas. It was during this time he had been an unwilling witness to some of the crimes committed in the city. Some involved the famous lawman, Bat Masterson. One event was labeld "The Battle of Cimmarron" and is recorded in the book "Ballots and bullets: the bloody county seat wars of Kansas" By Robert K. DeArment and also by the same author, "Bat Masterson: The Man and the Legend."3,4
