News/Obit* 14 April 1929  Clarke Co. Pioneer Called By Death
John A. Gaumer, 93, Here 63 Years, Died at His Home in Murray Sunday- a Mason 72 Years

Another name was dropped from the ever lessening list of Clarke County's living pioneers when John A. Gaumer, 93 years of age, passed away at his home in Murray last Sunday, after having been a resident of this county for 63 years.

A sketch of his long and exemplary life as given in the obituary read as a portion of the funeral services held at the Murray M. E. church Tuesday afternoon is as follows:
J. A. Gaumer was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, April 30, 1835, and departed this life at his home in Murray, Iowa, April 14, 1929, aged 93 years, 11 months and 16 days. When about two years of age he moved with his parents (John Gaumer and Mary Magdalena Shirer) to Coshocton county, where he spent his boyhood and young manhood days and was united in marriage to Elizabeth Fuller in 1857. In 1866 he came to Iowa with his family and settled on a farm six miles southwest of Murray, now known as the old Gaumer home. Here he lived until 1917 when he moved to Murray where he has since resided.

His first marriage was severed by death in May, 1878. There were nine children given to this union, five of whom are living.

On January 1, 1880, he was again united in marriage to Sarah E. Cone who departed this life May 11, 1917. To them were born seven children, all of whom are living.

He enlisted in the Civil War in Co. D, 191st Reg. Ohio Inf., February 15, 1865, and served to the close of the war. His early religious training was in the Luthern church, but since early in 1880 he has been a member of the Murray M. E. church where he was a faithful attendant until his hearing failed. He joined the Masonic Lodge No. 224 at Plainfield, Ohio, in 1857. In 1888 he transferred to Concordia Lodge No. 215 at Hopeville, Iowa. He was Master of this lodge seventeen years. On removal of Concordia Lodge to Thayer he transferred his membership to Surprise Lodge No. 396, Murray, Iowa. He was also a member of the Royal Arch Chapter No. 63 of Osceola, Iowa.

Following the services held at the Murray M. E. church Tuesday afternoon, interment was made in the Hopeville cemetery.
