News/Obit* after 8 November 1997  Sturgis: George Washington Marchand, 80, of 423 Susan St., Sturgis, a WWII veteran, died Nov. 8, 1997 at the Veterans Hospital in Battle Creek. He was born Feb. 8, 1917, in South Milford, Ind., a son of Charles Marchand and Retta Fleck Marchand, and was a resident of Sturgis and LaGrange, Ind., area most of his life. On July 29, 1939, he married Ruth Miller in LaGrange, Ind.

During WWII he served with the US Army and earned the rank of Private. He was a member of the Newman-Wenzel Post #73 American Legion, and he enjoyed fishing. A 1974 retiree of Michiana Container of Sturgis, where he was employed for nine years, he also was previously employed at the Sturgis Foundry, New York Central Railroad and Ford Motor Company of Detroit.

Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Della) McDaniel and Mrs. William (Marsha) Wood, both of Constantine, and Mrs. Charles (Sandy) Hettinger of Sturgis; three sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Sue Marchand of White Pigeon, George and Debbie Marchand of Mendon, and Floyd and Cathy Marchand of Sturgis; 22 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson; one sister, Golda Hart of LaGrange, Ind.; one brother, Maynard Marchand of Sturgis; and several nieces and nephews; he was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Howard and Jesse Marchand; one great-grandson, Nathan Long; and several brothers and sisters.

Relatives and friends may call from 2-4 and 6-8 Tuesday at the Hackman-Foglesong Funeral Home of Sturgis, where services are at 1 pm Wednesday. The Rev. James Bender of the First Baptist Church of Sturgis will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Sturgis, with full military rites conferred by Captain John L. Kelley Post #1355 Veterans of Foreign Wars. Memorials may be directed to the family. Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
