Death came at 7 o’clock last night at Linvill Memorial hospital to Joseph B. Lower 67, general manager at one time of the Oriental Consolidated Gold Mining Company in Korea. Death followed a years illness. Sunday evening the family of Mr. Lower was notified of the death of his brother Albert Lower, 73, which occurred Sunday Morning at Grover, Colorado, where he had lived for the past 30 years. The two men, born in Whitley county, were sons of John B. and Julia Ann Schuh Lower.
In 1901, Joseph B. Lower went to Korea with the original group of men from Whitley county, organized by the late Leigh Hunt. In 1930 he became general manager of the company; he served in that position until the mines were sold, when he returned to the United states. He spent the past six years in California, Nevada, New York and Columbia City. He was born December 16, 1877. Before he was admitted to Linvill Memorial hospital, Mr. Lower made his home with his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Schumaker, 501 West Market Street. He was married March 30, 1906 to Elsie Alice Schumaker, who died Dec 31, 1929 while a resident of Honolulu. A daughter Mrs. John Dana, survives, also a grand-daughter, Marie Jepsen of San Francisco, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Dana arrived in Columbia City three weeks ago after being interned for 38 months in prison camps in the Philippines. They were residents of Bagino, P I. Mr. Dana was with the United States Engineering department in the Philippines. Mr. Lower was a member of Columbia City Lodge No 189 F and A M and the Elks Order. Friends will be received after 7:30 o’clock tonight at the Smith Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, the Rev. G. L. Kleespie of Grace Lutheran church officiating. Committal services will be held in Greenhill cemetery.
The two brothers are survived by another brother Dr. Wallace Lower of Ft. Smith, Ark. and five sisters, Mrs. Viola Miller, Indianola, Iowa; Mrs. Melvin Schumaker, Mrs. Hurley Schumaker, Mrs. George Miller, Columbia City and Mrs. Mable Bridge Iowa. Albert Lower is also survived by his wife the former Bessie Lawrence of Whitley county; three sons, Robert Lower, Washington, D. C.; John Lower of Grover, Colo., Homer Lower, who is serving in the United States Navy, and one daughter, Mrs. Josephine Hahn, Grover, Colo. Mr. Lower was a teacher in the Whitley county school system at one time. After locating at Grover, Colo. he became manager of the Farmers Elevator company and later operated a drug store in the city. Funeral arrangements for Albert Lower are incomplete. Committal services will be held in Compton Church cemetery near this city, where a child of the Lowers is buried.2
