A memorial service for S. Edwin ''Doc'' Zimmerman Sr., a longtime Glen Burnie activist, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Glen Burnie United Methodist Church, 5 Second Ave. S.E., Glen Burnie.

Dr. Zimmerman, 89, died Oct. 14 at the University of Maryland Medical Center. The cause of death was not available.

Born Oct. 23, 1914, in Mayberry, he graduated from Westminster High School in 1932 and Western Maryland College (now McDaniel) College in 1936. He was a Glen Burnie resident for 64 years, and formerly lived in Carroll County.

Dr. Zimmerman was a math teacher at Glen Burnie High School for three or four years, but left teaching during World War II when he was drafted to serve in the Army. After returning from the service, he attended the University of Maryland Dental School. He graduated in 1944 and opened a private dental practice in Glen Burnie.

When he was drafted a second time during the Korean War, he served as an Army dentist. He reopened his practice when he returned home to Glen Burnie. He was a dentist from 1944 to 1980.

Dr. Zimmerman was an active member of Glen Burnie United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the United Methodist Men, the choir and the handbell choir.

He had been a member of the Glen Burnie Improvement Association since 1940, and received the association's Richard H. Carter Memorial Award in 1998 for his devotion to improving the community.

For his 25 years of service with the Salvation Army, he was awarded a lifetime membership in 1986. He also received service awards from 1987 to 1989. He served on the organization's Board of Directors and was chairman of the Kettle Drive.

Dr. Zimmerman also was active in the Kiwanis clubs of Glen Burnie, Odenton and Severn, the Boy Scouts and Arundel House of Hope, a coalition of churches that helps the homeless. He also threw parties for the clients and employees at Omni House in Glen Burnie, which provides mental health services to county residents.

Among the many awards he received for his volunteer service were the Glen Burnie Elks Lodge Citizen of the Year Award in 1980 and the YMCA Outstanding Leadership Award in 1982. He was a finalist for the Anne Arundel County Volunteer of the Year Award in 2002.

Dr. Zimmerman also was known as a devoted family man. He enjoyed gardening, especially cactus gardening and Anne Arundel County Fair gardening.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, to whom he was married for 38 years, Beverly Harrison Zimmerman; and one brother, Vernon Zimmerman.

Survivors include his wife of 19 years, Edna Warfield Zimmerman; one son, Sterling E. ''Ned'' Zimmerman Jr. of Grand Rapids, Mich.; three daughters, Barbara J. Jolly of Pennsylvania, Marion A. Zimmerman of Maine and Janet Z. Wolfing of Mount Airy; one stepson, Lester Warfield of Maryland; two stepdaughters, Shirley Thomas and Carol Bosley of Maryland; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Interment is private. Arrangements are by Stallings Funeral Home.
