James K. McDowell, 91, died April 27, 2001.

Born in Columbus, he served as a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict. Mr. McDowell retired as an engineer with the Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., and was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Preceded in death by wife, Julia C., in 1986, he is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Fred Thomas of Medina; son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Karen of Akron; son, John of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Julie and Bob Springhetti, Rick and Kim Thomas, Amanda and Scott McDowell, and Alex McDowell; great-grandchildren, Tyler and Paige Springhetti.

Private services will be held, with interment at WestLawn Cemetery in Canton. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 520 S. Main St. 2501, Akron 44311-1010. The family wishes to thank the staff at Pine Valley Care Center in Richfield for their kindness to the "Colonel." (Billow FAIRLAWN Chapel, 330-867-4141.)
