DEATH OF MRS. JANE SLATER

At the Ripe Old Age of Over 90 years She Passed Peacefully Away at Home of Her Daughter, Mrs. A. O. Adams.

Although she had reached a ripe old age the hearts of many friends were saddened by the announcement of the death of Mrs. Jane Slater, who passed away at 6:45 o'clock last Friday evening, February 1, 1923, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. O. Adams, in the south and of this village. The primary cause of her death was the fall she suffered on the 12th of October, since which time she had been confined to her bed almost continuously. Her remarkable vitality inspired her relatives and friends with the hope that more years would be added to her long life, but it was not to be. During the last week she declined rapidly and Friday evening she passed out of this life like one falling asleep and those about her scarcely knew when the end came. Until falling into this last sleep she retained her cheery disposition and clear mental faculties.

Mrs. Slater was the daughter of Col. Joseph Walker, a prominent pioneer citizen of Monroe township. She was born Dec. 8, 1832 and celebrated her 90th birthday last December 8th. In 1851 she married Harrison V. Slater, who died Jan. 10, 1906, their married life extending over 55 years. Seven children were born to them, two of whom, Orville and Rose, died in their early years. The surviving children are: mrs. C. N. Gaumer, Mrs. Margaret C. Ramsey, Mrs E. W. Cowden, all of Zanesville: Mrs. A. O. Adams, of Adamsville, and A. Barton Slater, of Adams township. Since the death of her husband 17 years ago Mrs. Slater had lived alone in her pleasant home here until the time of her injury last October, doing her housekeeping work and other other home duties just as in her earlier years. After her accident she was removed to the home of Mrs. Adams, where the daughters cared for her until the close of her life.

Although reared a Baptist, after her marriage Mrs. Slater became a member of New Hope Lutheran church and remained a faithful member of that church until the end of her life, taking a live interest in the work of the church and living the life of a true member of the church. She was one of the best known residents of this part of the county and noted for her hospitality and her charitable and Christian character. Mrs. Slater had resided in Adamsville nearly 26 years, prior to that living on a farm in Adams township.

The funeral was held Monday forenoon, with a brief dervice at the Adams home followed by the regular service at new Hope church and burial in the cemetery adjoining. Those services were in charge of L. S. Miller, pastor of New Hope Church.

    Undertaker, H. E. Shirer had charge of the burial and the pallbearers were C. B. Bell, E. H. Gosser, H. H. Knicely, H. E. Thrush, C. H. Hanks and E. C. Jordan.

Appeared in the Adamsville Register February 1923.
