McDERMOND MIRIAM BRANDT McDERMOND, 89, died early Sunday evening at Lakewood Hospital, Lakewood, OH., following McDermond was a native of Evanston, IL., and graduated from DePauw University in 1934. In her very first weeks on campus, she met her husband of 66 years, Maurice L. McDermond Sr. Following college, the couple was married in 1935 and began their lives together in Indianapolis. During the war years, Mrs. McDermond returned to Evanston with her young daughter. After the war, she concentrated on raising her family of then two children and became a community and civic leader in Indianapolis through such activities and agencies as the Washington Township School District PTA, the United Fund of Marion County and the Meridian Street Methodist Church. Mrs. McDermond was a 70- year member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and served as its College District President for Indiana during the 1960's. Following her husband's retirement as an insurance executive, the couple moved to Huron, OH., where Mrs. McDermond continued her community service. As a breast cancer survivor, she became involved with the American Cancer Society as a Volunteer Counselor, a role she pursued into her 80's. Mrs. McDermond was known for her sense of humor and her ''light touch'' in life. She was devoted to her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Maurice L. McDermond Sr.; her parents, Eddy S. and Sarah F. Brandt; and her brother, Sandford Brandt. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra McDermond Wood and her son, Maurice L. McDermond Jr., their spouses, James W. Wood, M.D. and Anne Frankel McDermond and five grandchildren, David W. Wood, M.D., Maurice L. McDermond III, Megan McDermond Preble, Sarah A. McDermond and Julie E. Wood. A memorial service is planned for Friday, Jan. 25, 2002 at 3 p.m. at The First Presbyterian Church in Huron, OH. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribu tions may be made to The First Presbyterian Church Building Fund, Firelands Regional Medical Center or one's charity of choice.

Memorial services: 3 p.m. Jan. 25 in First Presbyterian Church, Huron. Calling: none. Entombment: Meadow Green Cemetery, Huron. Memorial contributions may be made to the church's building fund or Firelands Regional Medical Center, Sandusky, Ohio. She was the widow of Maurice L. McDermond Sr. Survivors: children Sandra McDermond Wood, Maurice McDermond Jr.; five grandchildren. Groff Funeral Home, Huron, is handling arrangements.
