RIPLEY, N.Y. _ Joan Safford Newton, 65, of Washington Street, Westfield, N.Y., formerly of Ripley, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at Hamot Medical Center.
She was born in Portland, N.Y., Sept. 29, 1931, daughter of the late James L. and Jane D. Hanan Safford.


She had been employed as a cook and waitress at Larry's Restaurant and the 76 Truck Stop, both in North East, from 1968-1975. She had lived in Ripley until 1996. She was a member of the Ripley United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School.


Mrs. Newton was a member of Westfield United Methodist Church. She was a member for more than 40 years of the Fern Rebekah Lodge 484 in Findley Lake, where she was presently serving as treasurer. She was past chaplain of the Rebekah Assembly of the State of New York from 1996-97.


She participated in many leagues at North East Bowling Lanes. She also enjoyed cooking and various crafts.


She was preceded in death by a son, Daniel S. Newton, Dec. 7, 1973; and three brothers, Glenn Safford, Feb. 1, 1993, Raymond Safford, Nov. 29, 1994, and Frederick Safford Sr., May 12, 1996.


Survivors include her husband, Ardell D. Newton, whom she married Oct. 5, 1951; two sons, Jodell H. Newton of Jamestown and Glenn M. Newton of Westfield; four daughters, Pamela E. Lindstrom of Loneoak, Texas, Amelia S. Newton of Jamestown, Michelle D. Hawker of Westfield, and Heidi Jo M. Newton of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; 10 grandchildren, Floyd, Darrell and Sara Lindstrom, Jason, Adrianne and William Owens, Jason and Christina Newton, Pvt. Joseph A. Utegg, and Gretchen Hawker; a great-grandson; three sisters, Jennie Savich of Jamestown, Mary Lamphear of Dunkirk, N.Y., and Mary Safford of Arcadia, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.


No calling hours will be observed. Funeral services will be at the Mathews Funeral Home, 104 W. Main Road, Ripley, Tuesday at 2 p.m. Private burial will be at the Grahamville Cemetery in North East.
