THOMAS MARSHALL OF URBANNA DIES

Thomas F. Marshall Sr., a civic leader and pharmacist in Urbanna for more than half a century, died Sunday night in a Richmond hospital. He was 85.

A fixture in the Middlesex County town who surveyed its progress from behind an ever-present cigar and the counter of his drugstore, Mr. Marshall was a native of Victoria and graduated from the school of pharmacy at the Medical College of Virginia in 1922.

He had been active in the operation of the store, aided in recent years by two sons, until two weeks ago.
Mr. Marshall worked as a pharmacist in Richmond until 1929, then moved to Urbanna, where he opened Marshall's Drug Store. He served on the Town Council from 1936 until 1968. He was a past president of the Urbanna Chamber of Commerce and for 20 years presided over the Urbanna Labor Day Regatta, which was discontinued in 1968.

He was a past president of the Middlesex County Ruritan Club and had been a Mason for 56 years. He was a member and past master of Urbanna Lodge No. 83 AF&AM and was treasurer at the time of his death. He was a past deputy grand master of the 11th Masonic District and was a past high priest of Urbanna Royal Arch Chapter 59.

He belonged to Scottish Rite Bodies in Richmond and Acca Temple Shrine as well as Khedive Temple in Norfolk.
A member of the Urbanna United Methodist Church, where he was on the board of trustees, Mr. Marshall also was a director of the Bank of Middlesex for 38 years. He was chairman of the board at the time of his death and had been board president from 1958 until 1971.

The bank is now known as First Virginia Bank-Middle Peninsula.

In 1972, he was honored as grand marshal of the Urbanna Oyster Festival and he was a charter member of the Urbanna Volunteer Fire Department, which he helped organize in 1937.

For more than 30 years, Mr. Marshall, who was called "Doc" by most people who knew him, operated the town's alarm system in case of fires and when a rescue squad vehicle was needed.

Mr. Marshall served two terms on the MCV board of visitors and was a member of several pharmaceutical associations.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lucy Hotinger Marshall; two sons, Thomas F. Marshall Jr. and Richard E. Marshall; and two sisters, Mrs. Armond Gary of Victoria and Mrs. Ruth Wilkes, all of Urbanna.
