OBIT - BUTLER, JAMES M.

James M. Butler, 84, of Salem, quietly passed away on Sunday, October 31, 2004 at his home. He was born in Altoona, Pa. on April 29, 1920, son of the late James W. and Edythe Mann Butler. He served in the U. S. Air Force during World War II and was a member of College Lutheran Church. He enjoyed amateur basketball and softball, earning the title "Marquis de Softball" in 1946 and was retired from the City of Salem Parks and Recreation Department, where he helped organize A.S.A. Softball and supervised tournaments for 40 to 68 teams. He also officiated for high school football in Salem and the surrounding conference areas for 30 years. He was preceded in death by a son, Barrie Butler and is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy M. Butler; sons and daughters-in-law, James M. Butler, Jr. and wife, Jackie Hudson, Stephen M. Butler and wife, Dreama Dianne, John Bruce Butler and wife, Catherine; brother, Richard Butler; sister, Jo Ann Cashman; grandchildren, Steven Weiss, Ray, Heather Elise, Nathan, Matthew, Joshua and Chris Butler; great-grandchildren, Jalyn, Ashland and Matthew; numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 3, 2004 at 12 noon at College Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dwayne Westerman officiating. The family will greet friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to Gentle Shepherd Hospice, 4005 Electric Rd., S.W., Roanoke, Va., 24014 or to a favorite charity. The family is being served by John M. Oakey & Son Funeral Home, Salem, 389-5441.
