FORT WORTH - James W. Payne, 70, a retired electrical engineer, died Saturday morning, Sept. 19, 1998, at a local hospital.


Funeral: 10 a.m. Monday at Robertson Mueller Harper. Officiating: the Rev. Harold Elias-Perciful, the Rev. Virzola Law and the Rev. Alicia Harker, First Christian Church of Carrollton. Burial: George's Creek Cemetery in Somervell County.


Visitation: the family will be receiving friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.


Bearers of Mr. Payne's casket will be his sons, James L. and David L. Payne; his grandson, Harrison Payne; his brother, Richard Payne; and friends, Oscar "Reno" Archer, Griff Murphy and Wayne Nickell.


Memorials: The Heart Fund; or the American Cancer Society.


A native of Granbury, James W. Payne was the son of James Loyd and Vera Ratliff Payne and grew up in Somervell County. Following graduation from Glen Rose High School, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps.


After a tour in the service, Jim attended NTAC in Arlington. He retired as an electrical engineer from General Dynamics, now Lockheed-Martin.


A quote from his sons, "Dad loved all that was life."


Survivors: Wife, Billie Jean Firestone Payne of Fort Worth; sons, James Lewis Payne and his wife, Rose, of Carrollton and David Lynn Payne and his wife, Carol, of Dallas; grandchildren, Harrison, Connor and Isaac Payne; brother, Richard Payne and his wife, Rita, of Fort Worth; sisters, Dorothy Payne Ward of Glen Rose, Glisson Payne Karnes of Fort Worth, Peggy Lynn Payne Seale and her husband, Lacy, of Pittsburgh, and Beverly Payne Norman of Rio Rancho, N.M.; and several nieces and nephews.
