| News/Obit* | 28 December 2004 | Obituary, Vernon Miller "Jim" Diehl, 93, of Charlottesville, formerly of Pineville, died Monday morning, Dec. 27, 2004, in the University of Virginia Medical Center, where he had been admitted on Dec. 25, 2004. He was born in the Pineville area Nov. 24, 1911, and was a son of the late Harvey John and Laura Kyger Diehl. He was a member of the Mill Creek Church of the Brethren for the past 83 years. He was a retired farmer and served on the Board of Directors of the Rockingham Cooperative Farm Bureau, Southern States, and the Rockingham Stabilization and Conservation Service. He was instrumental in getting free fuel delivery to farmers. In 1944, he joined the Port Republic Ruritan Club beginning 60 years of continuous service and served on the Board of Directors of that organization. On Feb. 16, 1935, he married the former Pauline "Polly" Bateman, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Kitty and Ed Baker of Charlottesville; a son and daughter-in-law, Leon and Helen Diehl of Finksburg, Md.; three grandchildren, Sean Diehl, Steven Baker and Lori Anne Bukrim. Five great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by one son, Wendell Diehl; two sisters, Ethel D. Bauserman and Louise D. Dennett; five brothers, Sheldon Diehl, Wilmer Diehl, Ivan Diehl, Harry Diehl and Byron Diehl. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Mill Creek Church of the Brethren near Port Republic. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Kyger-Pence Funeral Home of McGaheysville Wednesday evening from 7 to 8.
