OBIT - BATEMAN, WILLIS SPURGEON

Willis Spurgeon Bateman, 87, of Roanoke, went to be with his Lord Tuesday, January 11, 2005. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Trudy Virginia Bateman; three brothers and two sisters. He was a lifelong member of Central Church of the Brethren where he served in numerous capacities at various times. Mr. Bateman graduated from Jefferson High School in 1936 and then received a degree from National Business College. He then served his country faithfully as a member of the 8th Army Air Force in Europe during World War II. After the war, Mr. Bateman received his bachelors degree from VPI. He worked for American Bridge-US Steel and in Roanoke City Schools. He retired from the Roanoke City Schools business office. He is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Eunice Bateman; two daughters, Kay B. Carr and Pamela B. Green; four grandchildren, John E. Green, IV and wife, Debbie, David W. Green and wife, Kate, and Melissa and Karen Carr; four great-grandchildren, all of Roanoke. Also surviving is a sister, Pauline Diehl, of McGaheysville, Va.; and four nieces and nephews, of Roanoke. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2005 at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with Pastor Tim Harvey officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Central Church of the Brethren, 416 Church Avenue, Roanoke, Va. 24016. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel.
