Biography*   From the Decatuer County, Iowa History

"Madison was of Yankee stock and she, Cynthia, of dutch descent. They were married in Ohio and there she passed away when Elzina was six years of age. Madison then married Mary J. of Gallia County in Ohio. After farming in the buckeye state for a number of years, he came to Iowa in 1865 and located in Morgan Township. He became the owner of land in Missouri and eventually moved to Mercer county where he died in the spring of 1907."

James Madison Shields was born in Louisa Co. Virginia, August 3, 1823. He died at the home of his son L. H. Shields in Mercer Co., Missouri, May 22, 1906 aged 82 years, 9 months, and 19 days. He removed with his parents to Ohio in early life where he grew to manhood and was married to Cyntha Long who died in Gallia Co., Ohio. To this union 3 children were born. Mrs. Elzina Hollinger of Decatur Co., Iowa; Ashley Shields of Mercer Co.; and Mrs. Sandy Wasson, deceased. Mr. Shields was married in Ohio to Mary J. Turner. To this union 5 children were born, 3 died in infancy, and Lee and Linnie. He lived in Decatur Co. 1865 to 1873, then moved to Mercer Co. Funeral Services were at the house.

News/Obit* 1906  DEATH OF UNCLE MATTEY SHIELDS

The death of Uncle Mattey Shields occured at the home of his son Lee, six miles northeast of here on Tuesday morning of this week. He had been in feeble health for a considerable time now, no doubt due to his declining years being almost 83 years of age. The remains were laid in their last resting place yesterday at the Union Cemetery in Decatur County, Iowa, his former home. Uncle Mattey moved to Decatur Co. in 1865. He was well known and had been a member of the M.E. Church many years. He leaves four children, two sons and two daughters. Lee, Ashley, Elzina and Linnie.
