Former Damascus resident Wilma J. Bayless, 213 N. Heron St., Briny Breezes, Fla., died at 8 a.m. Friday at Crandall Medical Center in Sebring following a one-year illness.


Mrs. Bayless was born June 6, 1913 in Newell, W. Va., to Leonard G. and Stella Arthur Spencer. She and her husband founded and owed Bayless Gas ad Mobile Homes in Damascus. After retiring in 1964, they moved to Hendersonville, N.C., dividing their time between North Carolina and Florida. Mrs. Bayless owned Wilma's Shoppe in Hendersonville for 10 years. She was a member of Bethel United Church of Christ in Beloit; a past president of Damascus Mother's Club; a former member of Salem Hospital Auxiliary, Order of the Eastern Star in Sebring and Mile Branch Grange; ad a charter member of Damascus Fire Department Auxiliary.


Mrs. Bayless is survived by her husband, Paul A., whom she married Feb. 23, 1933; a daughter, Beverly (Mrs. Curt) Mosher of Salem; two sons, David of Raleigh, N.C., and Bruce of Damascus; a brother, Leonard Spencer of Beloit; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Vera Spencer and Olive Beardsley, and a brother, Robert Spencer.


Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethel United Church of Christ with the Rev. Dan Thimell officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Park. Friends may call 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Stark Memorial Funeral Home in Salem. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Wilma Bayless Scholarship Fund, the Goshen Alumni Association, or the memorial fund of Bethel Church.
