Former Damascus resident Paul A. Bayless, 89, of Q-213 N. Heron Drive died Thursday at his home. Born July 16, 1909, in Smith Township, he was the son of the late Water A. and Agnes (Allison) Bayless. In 1932 he started a milk bottle exchange. Before World War II, he started Bayless Mobile Home Sales, an early Champion Homes dealer. In 1941, he founded Bayless Gas Inc. in Damascus, The company was established in the family home, where he also sold gas appliances. Mr. Bayless also established an aluminum extrusion company and mobile home park in Damascus. In 1962, he retired and moved to Hendersonville, N.C., where he became a residential and commercial land developer. In 1986, he moved to Florida, and was a founding stockholder of Briny Breezes Corp. in Boynton Beach. He was a member of Bethel United Church of Christ in Beloit, attended First Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville and Briny Beach Chapel in Florida. An active member of the Chiselers and the boating and fishing club, he was also a member of Kedron Masonic Lodge 387 in Hendersonville, Scottish Rite of Youngstown, a life member of Al Koran Temple in Cleveland and a charter member of the Damascus Ruritan Club.


Survivors are a daughter; Beverly Mosher of Salem; two sons, Bruce of Damascus and David of Cary, N.C.; a sister, Dorothy Foreman of New Castle, Pa.; a brother, George Bayless of North Benton; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death in 1993 by his wife, the former Wilma Spencer, whom he married Feb. 23, 1933.


Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Arbaugh Pearce Geenisen Funeral Home is Salem with the Rev. Shane Estes officiating. Burial will be at Highland Memorial Park. Calling hours are Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Bethel United Church of Christ in Beloit.
