| Biography* | (From the personal notes of Nettie Long) I never knew my grandfather. His name was Charles Long, Jr. b. May 15, 1798 and d. October 25, 1882 in Salem or Columbiana, Ohio m. ca 1825. He was born near the natural bridge, virginia and was nursed by a black mammy. His people were wealthy. He married Christiana Hartzell b. November 4, 1800. My grandmother was a very sweet, blue-eyed woman. It was always a very happy occasion when she came to our home to spend the day. She was a cripple a number of years before her death due to tripping over some children's playthings left on the floor. My father always carried her from her carriage into the house. She lived about 1/2 mile from our home, in a big white house surrounded by a lovely lawn. As I look back through the years my thoughts go back to a beautiful afternoon in May when I went to my grandmothers home and found her out on the lawn under the trees, mostly apple trees, which were pink and white with bloom. She was in her wheel chair, that is the way she got around after her accident. It made a lovely picture. The closely clipped lawn, the little black lace cap, over her white hair and calling a cheery greeting. Another incident of her that impressed me as a young girl, was seeing her seated by the window listening to her son the Rev. John Long reading the Bible. My grandmother Long spoke English perfectly although her parents were German and she spoke German only until she was six years old when she began to learn to speak English. There were eight children in Grandfather and Grandmother Long's family. Their names were Josiah, Catherine, Anne, John, Addison (my father), Alice, Henry, and Mary. Their home was near East Palestine, Ohio. It was there my grandfather Long died in 1877, and my grandmother died in 1880. My father was a member of the Presbyterian Church. His brother, John, was a Presbyterian minister and was pastor of the Church at Ithaca, Michigan for sixteen years. His mother's brother, Joseph Hartzell, was a missionary to Africa for twenty years in the Methodist Church. After writing the above history, I received some information concerning great-grandfather Charles Long and great-grandmother, Catherine Firestone. My great-grandfather, Charles Long was born near the Natural Bridge, Virginia about 1770. He married Catherine Firestone of Columbiana, Ohio. At the age of thirteen, great-grandfather Long shouldered his gun and went west with a wagon train over the route Daniel Boone opened up through the mountains to that part of Ohio called the Western Reserve. He lived in diferent places in Ohio. The site of Canton, Ohio was his property. Also he had farms near Unity. Later his wife was buried there, also. His son, Charles Long, Jr. (my grandfather) was born ca 1798 at Natural Bridge, Virginia. His parents kept slaves. He had two brothers, Israel and Henry, who was nicknamed Mount. Mount had to leave home because he drank too much. He went South and never returned. To Charles and Christine Hartzell Long were born: Josiah Long b. March 15, 1826 in Unity twp, Coumbiana, Ohio m.Matilda Rayle Catherine Long b. march 8, 1828 in Unity twp, Columbiana, Ohio m. Samuel Bayless Anne Long b. My grandmother, Christine Hartzell Long, several brothers by the last name of Hartzell moved from Bethlehem, Pennsylvania in 1806 to that part of Ohio known as the Western Reserve. They setled in Mahoning County near Deerfield and North Benton. They only spoke German until my grandmother was six yars od and she began to learn to speak English. My father, Addison Long, was married to Teabean Ann Eaton b. ca 1844 (Note: some researchers have the name spelled Phebe instead of Theabean) at East Palestine, Ohio on May 12 1864. Thebean died April 30, 1865 at the age of twenty-one years. Addison Long, my father, then married Mary Detcheon b. January 23, 1842, my mother, on April 17, 1867 at North Benton, Ohio. She died September 12, 1915 at Chetopa, Kansas. They lived on their farm near East Palestine, Ohio until they sold their lovely farm home and moved to Chetopa, Labette, Kansas. I was born at the farm home near East Palestine and my three sisters also. Their names and dates of birth are Adda, June 5, 1868; Nettie, October 21, 1869 d. March, 1976; Edith, April 2, 1874; and Estella Marie, June 1, 1881. Adda never married and she died November 22, 1923. Nettie Long m. November 1861 to Andrew E. McKnight of Chetopa, Kansas.
