About 1861 Hiram started farming in Nimishillen townhip, Stark county, Ohio, on a farm owned by his father. After three years he returned to the family farm in Plain township and purchased the farm from his father's estate after his death. Here he remained for the rest of his life. He specialized in sheep raising.

As well as his farming interests, Hiram held a fifth interest in the Canton Farmers Bank, from it's incorporation. He was a director for 3 1/2 years until he withdrew from it's operations. In 1880 he associated himself with the Canton City National Bank. He also was employed as a timber agent for the Connotton Valley Railway, a narrow guage railroad which operated between Youngstown, Cleveland and Coshocton, Ohio. Hiram took great interest in the building of this rail system.3
