COSHOCTON -- Helen Viola Mercer, 91, of Norwich, passed away at 10:25 p.m., Wednesday (Nov. 12, 2008) at Autumn Health Care, Zanesville.

She was born Feb. 22, 1917, in Muskingum County, the daughter of the late Clyde L. and Ruth (Hutchison) Adams.

During World War II, she was a packer for the former Hazel Atlas Glass House followed by employment at Owens-Corning in Newark.

She and her husband were active for many years in the Adamsville Fire Department.

Helen enjoyed feeding humming birds, reading and playing cards.

On Jan. 13, 1946, she married Hiram Lewis Mercer, who preceded her in death on Feb. 4, 2005.

Surviving are three sons, Russell E. (Kay F.) Mercer of Norwich, Robert A. (Shelia) Mercer of Acworth, Ga., and Thomas L. (Grace) Mercer of Manila, Philippines; daughter-in-law, Shirley Adams of Byesville; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Mary L. Steele of Greensburg; and special cousins, Ralph and Betty Hutchison of Zanesville.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Donald Adams; a sister, Esther St. Clair; and three brothers, Clyde Raymond Adams, Arthur L. Adams and William D. Adams.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday and until time of services on Sunday at the Free Funeral Home, Coshocton.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with her grandson-in-law, Pastor Chris Hudson officiating. Interment will follow at New Hope Cemetery in Adamsville.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Genesis Healthcare System, 713 Forest Ave., Zanesville, OH 43701-99663. Envelopes are available at the Free Funeral Home.
