the Dungan Ancestry of the Descendants of William Dungan & Frances Latham
dismantling the myth:
Excerpts from Thomas P. Dungan's A Quest for Origins: The Search for the Parentage of William Dungan, Perfumer of St. Martin-in-the-Fields

INTRODUCTION The
creation of this small publication was a direct result of numerous request
from readers of my first book entitled John Dongan of Dublin An Elizabethan
Gentleman and His Family. Realizing that I had more information relating to
William Dungan, they wanted to read what I had accumulated. To meet this
demand I went well beyond rewriting my two articles concerning William and the
search for his parents. These articles were nevertheless the basis from which
I produced this booklet. My first article, "Correcting the Ancestry of
William Dungan, Perfumer of St. Martin‑in‑the‑Fields,"
appeared in The Genealogist (Fall issue 1983, volume 4, No. 2). My second
article entitled `flew Evidence in the Search for the Parentage of William
Dungan of St. Martin‑in‑the‑Fields," was written and
submitted to The Genealogist in 1991. For a number of reasons beyond my
control it was not published until 1989 (Fall issue, volume 10, No. 2). The
information contained in this work is aimed primarily at those who have some
knowledge of the previous controversy surrounding the assumed parentage
attributed to William Dungan and my attempts to set the record straight. For
those unfamiliar with this controversy, it my be confusing to understand that
correcting an old genealogical assumption is often met with a great deal of
resistance by those who firmly believe a previous scenario. It may also be
hard to follow the two competing claims. Therefore I have presented a portion
of the earlier claim as well as the reasons for making a different assessment. The framework of my reasoning is essentially presented in biographical portraits of three individuals, one of who I can disprove in a formerly assumed relationship. The other two who were formerly assumed to be of no connection now appear to be of some relationship. The first person is Thomas Dongan "of Lincoln's Inn" who was formerly assumed to be William's father. The second person is Richard Dungan, a master plasterer of London. The third person, of course, is William Dungan the perfumer.
