Joseph Robert "Joe" Hinners was born at Denison, Iowa, June 11, 1962, the son of Robert and Ione Mueggenberg Hinners. He was raised in Denison receiving his early education at St. Rose of Lima Catholic School before being graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1980. Joe enjoyed sports, playing Little League Baseball as a youngster, football and basketball while in high school and as an adult he enjoyed playing in the volleyball leagues.
Following high school Joe was employed at Dubuque Pack for a time before starting his many year career with Denison Drywall where he was employed at the time of his death.
Through the years, in his spare time, he was an avid fisherman, enjoyed hunting and camping and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren, Tristan and Sydney. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison.
Joe died early Sunday morning, January 12, 2003 at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 40 years, 7 months and 1 day.
Joe was preceded in death by his grandparents, Alfred and Hildegaard Hinners and Joseph and Margaret Mueggenberg, Sr., and one cousin, Debbie Davisson.
Those remaining to cherish his memory include two daughters: Amber Hinners of Denison and Ashly Hinners of Vail, Iowa; his parents: Robert and Ione Hinners of Denison; two grandchildren: Tristan and Sydney Hinners of Denison; three sisters and their husbands: Theresa and Rick Schramm of Denison, Tammy and Jim Loughran of Papillion, Nebraska, and Tracey and Scott Reetz of Denison; a niece; nephews; uncles; aunts; cousins; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 16, 2003 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison with Father Edward Murray as Celebrant. Others participating in the Mass included servers, Ashley Reiser, Ryan Claypool, and Alyssa Evers, Lector, Marilyn Grote, Eucharistic Minister, Arnie Grote, and Gift Bearers, C.J., Alex, Emily, and Ian Loughran. Ministry in music for the Mass was provided by the St. Rose of Lima Adult Choir singing "On Eagles Wings", "Be Not Afraid", "How Great Thou Art", and "Let There Be Peace On Earth" with Jean Cornelius serving as organist. Honorary bearers were Tristan and Sydney Hinners and Joe's co-workers at Denison Drywall. Casket bearers included Jerry Malone, Russ Mathies, Justin Hinners, Steve Mueggenberg, Mike Malone, Shawn Kierscht, and Kerry Kierscht. Interment was at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in Denison. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison was privileged to be in charge of arrangements where on Wednesday, January 15, 2003, a Legion of Mary Rosary, led by Emmett Fitzpatrick was prayed at 4:00 p.m. and a Parish Vigil Service, led by Father Edward Murray, was held at 7:00 p.m.__________________________________________________________

Denison Bulletin, Tuesday, December 10, 2002Alice Marie Jones, 65, of Orlando, Florida, formerly of Manilla, Iowa passed away on November 19, 2002 of cancer at her sons home in Salt Lake City, Utah.
She was born April 8, 1937 at Dunlap, Iowa to Herbert and Stella Wieland Rule. Alice graduated in 1955 at Manilla High School. She moved to Omaha, Nebraska and work at Mutual of Omaha.
She married Curtis Jones, Jr. at Offutt Air Force Base in Bellevue, Nebraska on October 11, 1957. They lived in Orlando, Florida, where she worked in the engineering department for the city of Orlando for thirty years.
Alice is preceded in death by her parents and one sister. Survivors include her son Richard Mahlon Jones and two grandchildren, Makahla and Bryce.
She is survived by three brothers: James Rule of Denison, Iowa, Gerald Rule and his wife, Margene, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Ronald Rule and his wife Jan of Bricktown, New Jersey; and two sisters: Mary Greer and her husband of Clarinda, Iowa and Jane Mason of Las Vegas, Nevada; nieces, nephews, and a multitude of friends.__________________________________________________________
Hutchinson, Kenneth
Denison Bulletin, Tuesday, April 7 1998, page 8, column 3Kenneth Inghram Hutchinson was born on a farm in Milford Township, Crawford County, Iowa, September 18, 1917, the only child of George Marion and Frances Myrtle Inghram Hutchinson. He was raised on the farm and received his education in the Milford Center School before being graduated as Valedictorian from the Denison High School with the Class of 1934. He furthered his education at Iowa State University, where he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity and was graduated with honors in 1939. Upon graduation he returned to farm in Milford Township.
On June 4, 1941, Kenneth was united in marriage with Mildred Ruth Crane at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Their union was blessed with five children, Kenneth E, Keith, Nancy, Kerry and Cherith. They farmed in Milford Township northeast of Denison, moving to their present farm in 1952. Kenneth took great pride in farming and was an avid practitioner of conservation methods to preserve the land for future generations. He raised Aberdeen Angus cattle and grew corn, soybeans, and other crops. Kenneth retired in 1982 but continued to reside on the farm. He maintained an active interest in the farm operations and particularly, enjoyed mowing the lawn, pruning the trees, and other yard work, Kenneth's greatest love in life was his family. He especially enjoyed raising their children and spending time with the grandchildren and with Milly's family.
He was an active member of the United Presbyterian Church in Vail where he had served as an Elder, Deacon and Clerk of the Session. For several years he served as a Director of the Federal Land Bank and from 1951 until his death he served on the Board of Directors of the Crawford County Trust and Savings Bank in Denison.
Kenneth died Wednesday morning, April 1, 1998 at St Joseph Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska. At the time of his death he had attained the age of 80 years, 6 months and 13 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Those who remain to cherish his memory include his wife of over 56 years, Milly Hutchinson of rural Denison; five children. Kenneth E Hutchinson of San Jose, California; Keith Hutchinson and his wife, Glenda, of Lancaster, Texas; Nancy Hutchinson of Evansville, Indiana, Kerry Hutchinson Roselle Park, New Jersey; Cherith and husband, Joseph Thelen, of rural Denison; seven grandchildren, Jeff Hutchinson of Richmond, Virginia, Ken Hutchinson attending Texas A&M University, Andria Hutchinson of White Plains, New York, and Christopher, Andy, Melissa and Danny Thelen of rural Denison; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, April 4, 1998 at the United Presbyterian Church, Vail, Iowa, with the Rev Sue Babovec officiating. Music for the service included soloist, Glenn Freese, singing "How Great Thou Art" and "In The Garden" and the congregation singing "Amazing Grace" and "He Leadeth Me". Kevin Freese served as organist. Casket bearers included Frank Hawley, Henry Olson, LeRoy Childress, Terry Prickett, Roger Dreeszen and Glenn Schultz. Sioux City Journal May 24, 2002Myra Hamann, 87, of Battle Creek, formerly of Schleswig, Iowa died Tuesday, May 21, 2002, at Willow Dale Care Center in Battle Creek. Funeral services were held Friday, May 24, 2002 at United Church of Christ in Schleswig. Burial was in Morgan Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Huebner Funeral Home in Schleswig.
Myra Hamann was born in Schleswig on May 7, 1915, the daughter of John and Anna Hamann. She was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the sacrament of Holy Baptism on Aug. 27, 1915, and confirmed in the Christian faith at Friedens Evangelical Church on Palm Sunday 1929.
She was raised in Schleswig, where she attended the Morgan 7 country school. She graduated from Schleswig High School in 1933. She graduated from Morningside College in Sioux City, magna cum laude, in 1937. She was president and general chairman of the Sigma Tau Delta Sorority during her college years.
Myra taught in numerous schools in the area including Grand Meadows, Bagley, Manning, Storm Lake and Ida Grove, Iowa. A most rewarding part of her life was seeing her students succeed in life. She was remembered by many of her students with thanks and corresponded with many of them throughout her life. Myra was a poet and a writer of stories, she especially enjoyed writing about the history of Schleswig. Many of her writings were published. She loved spending time with her family, she especially enjoyed family gatherings.
She is survived by a nephew-in-law, Delbert (Ramona) Gierstorf; four nieces and their husbands, Iona and Melvin Nelson of Sumers, Iowa, Ladonna and Richard Bumann of Castana, Iowa, Janice and Willie Weltz of Denison, Iowa, and Joleen and Ken Schwarz of Plano, Texas; and two nephews and their wives, John and Arlis Bahnsen of Schleswig and Gaylen and Marvel Bahnsen of Schleswig.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Anna and John Hamann; a sister and her husband, Garnett and Martin Bahnsen; and a niece, Ramona Gierstorf.__________________________________________________________
Schroeder, Leonore
Schleswig Leader August 15, 2002Leonore Emma (Schroeder) Hamann was born June 13, 1912 to Herman Schroeder and Ella (Peters) Schroeder in Crawford County, Iowa. Leonore died July 22, 2002 at the age of ninety.
Leonore graduated from the Schleswig High School in 1930. In 1932 she started teaching at Morgan No. 7 Schleswig, Iowa.
She was united in marriage to Edmund Hamann on June 9, 1939.
In 1958 Leonore returned to teaching furthering her education by night school and summer school. In May 1968 she graduated from Drake University with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Leonore taught 4th grade in Ida Grove for ten years and seventeen years in the Schleswig School system. She retired in May 1975.
Leonore was an active member of the Women's Guild and the Dorcas Society at the United Church of Christ. Also a member of the Crawford County Hospital Auxiliary and the Iowa State Educational Association and a charter member of the Iowa Retired Teacher's Association.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edmund in December 2001, her father and mother, her brother-in-law, Robert who lived with them and died in March 2001, a sister Garnet and Herbert Potter, two sisters-in-law, Lillie Wellendorf Johnson and Edna and Ray Bumann.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, Gary and Barbara Potter, Dennis and Trude Potter, all of Anoka, Minnesota; Earl and Shirley Bumann, Lucille Bumann Mason and Mildred and Jim Fleenor, all of Ida Grove; Dolores and Delayne Linn of Morris, Illinois; June Bumann of Englewood, Colorado; Edna Mae and Tom Phillips of Ida Grove; Lois and Ed Skinner of Altoona, Iowa; Carol and Roger Clausen of Missouri Valley, Iowa; Karen S. Bumann and Roger and Karen Bumann, all of Ida Grove; Jeanette and Dick Messer of Altoona, Iowa; and many relatives and friends.

Schultz, LaVerna LaVerna L.(Schultz) Ferguson, Age 84, died on Ash Wednesday, March 8, 2000 at Riverview of AnnArbor, Michigan, where she resided for the past two and a half years. LaVerna was born May 27, 1915 in Schleswig, Iowa, to Martin Johann August Schultz and Emma Lissetta Schwartz Schultz. She was baptized on July 18, 1915 and confirmed in the Lutheran faith on March 24, 1929 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, graduated from Schleswig High School in 1932 and moved to Ann Arbor c. 1937 to take a job as a housekeeper/nanny for a local family. She met her husband Elmer when he delivered groceries to the home where she worked. They were married December 27, 1941. While Elmer served overseas in WWII, LaVerna worked worked at King Sealey in Ann Arbor and then at the bomber plant in Detroit. She served as Commander of the Washtenaw County Chapter of Disabled American Veteran's Auxiliary after WWII. She was employed by the University of Michigan Dental School and retired in the early 1980s. LaVerna was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church for over 53 years, transferring to Our Savior Lutheran Church of Chelsea in 1994. She was a true helpmate to Elmer through 56 years of marriage and a loving mother to her three children. LaVerna was well liked, having a sweet and unassuming disposition. In her more active years, she enjoyed attending church, family get-togethers, travel, reading, gardening, crocheting and many other craft projects. LaVerna was preceded in death by her sister, Larene Schultz; her parents and husband. She is survived by her sister, Joyce Richardson (Lee) of Moscow, ID; her children, The Rev. Jack D. Ferguson (Kathryn) Pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in Colby, KS and Chaplain (Colonel)USAR (Ret.), Janet E. Wain (Richard) of Bicester, England, Eileen Ferguson (Dennis Johnson) of Ann Arbor; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; several sisters and brothers-in-law; cousins; nieces and nephews; and friends. Perhaps her greatest contribution and most important gift was that of being a witness to others of her deeply committed faith in our Lord Jesus Christ. Funeral services were held Monday, March 13, 2000 at Our Savior Lutheran Church, Chelsea. Burial in Arborcrest Memorial Park, Ann Arbor. Wiegel, Larry Larry Allen Wiegel, born October 20, 1946, the son of Leonard and Gladys Alberts Wiegel, died January 8, 2000 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of fifty-three.
Larry was baptized in Christ on December 8, 1946 at St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak and later confirmed there on April 10, 1960. He graduated from Charter Oak High School in 1964, and attended Iowa State University in Ames. In 1966, Larry entered the United States Army and was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, where he served until 1968. On October 23, 1971, Larry was united in marriage to Joyce Segebart at St. John Lutheran Church. The couple was blessed with the birth of three children, Kesley, Lance and Brittney. Larry was employed at Iowa Beef Packing Plant, where he worked for more than thirty years.
He enjoyed attending farm auctions and collecting farm antiques such as machinery, old wagons and toy tractors. He also enjoyed visiting with his friends, working in the yard and was very environmentally conscious, especially with regard to trees for bird habitats. He was a very loving husband and father, who enjoyed spending time with his wife and children and attending family reunions and other family functions.
Larry was a member of the Homer Hall American Legion. He was active in the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, where Larry taught Sunday School since 1994.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, his father, Leonard and one nephew, Brian Bremser. He is survived by his wife, Joyce; two daughters, Kesley Wiegel of Maryville, Missouri and Brittney of Charter Oak and his son, Lance of Charter Oak; his mother, Gladys of Denison; four sisters, Sharon Bremser and her husband, Bruce of Treynor, Iowa, Valdene Wiegel of Denison, Pam Ray and her husband, Gordon of Blair, Nebraska and Patty Schulenberg and her husband, John of Savannah, Missouri; and nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 11, 2000 at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Rev. L.C. Gebhardt officiated the services and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison. Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Gwen Eckland as she sang, 'His Eye Is On The Sparrow' and for congregational hymns 'Go Tell It on the Mountain' and 'Lift High The Cross'. Kuhlmann, Florence Florence Caroline Hildebrandt was born August 19, 1914, the daughter of William F. and Theresa Ossenkop Kuhlmann. She died at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, Thursday, November 18, 1999 at the age of eighty-five.
Florence was born near Charter Oak, Iowa and was baptized in Christ on September 6, 1914 at St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak and later confirmed there on April 10, 1927. She received her education in a rural school in Willow Township and graduated from the Charter Oak High School with the class of 1931. After completing her education, Florence taught in a rural school for a number of years.
On July 22, 1934, Florence was united in marriage to John Hildebrandt at St. John Lutheran Parsonage in Charter Oak by Rev. A. Amstein. The couple made their home on a farm southeast of Charter Oak until 1968, when they moved to a farm east of Charter Oak. In 1972, the couple moved to Charter Oak.
Florence was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, their Ladies Aid and the Crawford County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was a very loving and caring mother and grandmother. She put everyone's care before her own. Florence loved the farm life, where she enjoyed cooking and gardening, sewing and reading.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1982, one grandson, Steven Boger, two sisters, Marie Magill and Esther Kruse. Survivors include three daughters, Benita Boger and her husband, Floyd of Denison; Faylene Paulsen and her husband, Ronald of Charter Oak; Jacqueline Henry and her husband, Wayne of Council Bluffs; fourteen grandchildren and thirty-great-grandchildren; one brother, Raymond Kuhlmann of Charter Oak; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 22, 1999, at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. L.C. Gebhardt officiated the service and grave side rites held at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison, Iowa. Fiene, Irma Irma Fiene, 93, of Charter Oak, Iowa died Saturday, August 8, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Irma Helene Fiene, daughter of Paul and Julieanne (Dicke) Fiene was born August 2, 1905 in Charter Oak, in the home in which she lived all her life, except for the years she spent teaching in other communities. She received her early education in the Lutheran Day school and graduated from the Charter Oak High School in 1923. She attended Concordia Lutheran Teacher's College at Seward, Nebraska, and received her degree in Elementary Education and Social Studies from Iowa State Teacher's College (now the University of Northern Iowa) at Cedar Falls.
She was a member of Kappa Delta Phi and AAUW. She taught in the elementary grades and junior high (English) for well over 50 years in the following communities: Charter Oak, Paullina, Ute, Boone, Storm Lake, Waterloo, Iowa and Chicago, Illinois.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, where she was the organist and directed the womens choir for 10 years. She was also a member of the Ladies Aid and Crawford County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. Hobbies included: reading, walking, organ, music box collection, and for several years kept busy translating German letters, etc. for people working on their genealogy.
Survived by a sister, Esther Deur of McKinney, Texas.

Lorenzen, Louis
Denison Review, Friday, October 18, 2002Louis Gustav Lorenzen, son of Andreas Bernard and Anna Willimena Lackman Lorenzen, was born June 18, 1927, at Boyer, Iowa. He grew up in Boyer where he attended public school. He also attended country school near his home while living two miles north of Boyer. After his father died on October 6, 1939, he moved to Manilla with his mother and family. He attended Manilla Public School and graduated with the class of 1946.
On November 9, 1948, Louis joined the United States Navy and served as machinist's mate for two tours of duty in the Korean War Zone aboard the USS Valley Forge and USS Princeton. Upon being discharged, Louis returned to Manilla and lived with his mother in Walkertown.
On May 30, 1965, Louis was united in marriage with Lois Fisher at Red Oak, Iowa. Louis and Lois lived in Manilla and on the road as Louis worked as a heavy equipment operator in many places including Alaska. Lois died March 20, 1989.
On December 23, 1990, Louis was once again united in marriage, this time to Phyllis Larsen Christiansen at Las Vegas, Nevada. They made their home in Denison.
Louis was a member of the United Church in Manilla, the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed visiting, hunting, fishing, and spending time at Okoboji.
On Thursday, October 3, 2002, Louis died suddenly and unexpectedly at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa. He was 75 years, 3 months, and 15 days of age.
Besides his parents and first wife, Louis was preceded in death by four brothers: William Lorenzen, LeRoy Lorenzen, Raymond Lorenzen, and Arthur Lackman; and two sisters Elsie Scofield and Tillie Tebben.
He is survived by his wife Phyllis Lorenzen of Denison; three step daughters: Donna Brink and her husband Ron of Sioux Center; Vickie and husband Jeff Hansen of Blair, Nebraska; Julie Brown of Schleswig; ten step-grandchildren: Jonathan, Crystal, Carl, Ray, Angie, Cory, Tyler, McKayla, Aaron, and Kristen; a step great-grandson, Jayden; a sister Marie Kothenbeutel of Hampton; three brothers: Andrew Lorenzen and wife Elna of Manchester, Connecticut; Elmer Lorenzen and Marvin Lorenzen and wife LaRoice, all of Manilla; a brother-in-law George Scofield of Gravity; and by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 7, 2002 at the United Church of Manilla in Manilla, Iowa. Reverend Larry McAlpine of United Methodist Church in Manning, Iowa officiated the service and interment held in the Morgan Township Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Barbara Agan provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Kay Rutherford, singing, "How Great Thou Art", "Amazing Grace", and "The Old Rugged Cross". Those serving as casketbearers were Roger Lorenzen, Dennis Lorenzen, Gaylon Scofield, Elton Scofield, George Kelbl, Jeff Hansen, and Jason Cook. Military honors were provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3517 and American Legion Post 22 of Manning, Iowa. Clausen, Donald
Schleswig Leader February 27, 2003Donald Jens Clausen was born January 7, 1925, the son of Herbert and Alma Schoenfeld Clausen. He died Monday, February 17, 2003 at the Denison Care Center in Denison, Iowa, at the age of seventy-eight.
Donald was born on a farm in Morgan Township, Crawford County, Iowa. He was baptized in Christ on March 8, 1925 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Soldier Township, Charter Oak, Iowa and later confirmed there on May 28, 1939.
Donald received his education in a rural school near his home and graduated from the Charter Oak High School on May 14, 1942. After completing his education, he helped on the family farm and hauled livestock for various trucking firms.
On June 12, 1949, Donald was united in marriage to Dorothy Teut at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. The couple settled on a farm near Ricketts and were blessed with the birth of three daughters. They continued farming until retiring and moving to Schleswig in November of 1987. Donald then worked for Milford and Brad Schultz until suffering a stroke in October of 1993.
Donald was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and a former member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Ricketts. He served as an elder for nine years and other various offices of the church. He served as president of the Crawford County Beef Producers and was a former member of the Schleswig and Ricketts Community Clubs. Donald did volunteer work for the Children's Miracle Network. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, especially making bird houses and socializing with family and friends in a game of cards. His special pride was watching his granddaughters play softball. He loved many family trips across the United States, Hawaii and their cruise to Alaska.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Denison; three daughters, Darlis Clausen of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Debbie Zeimen and her husband, Irvin of Arion, and Denise Clausen of Minneapolis, Minnesota; four grandchildren, Heather, Jodi, Kara and Nikki Zeimen and one great-grandson, Evan Zeimen; two sisters, Delores Ahrenholtz and her husband, Willis of Denison and Dorothy Bielfeldt of Denison; one brother-in-law, Donald Teut and his wife, Evelyn of Schleswig; many other relatives and friends.
He will be greatly missed by his grand dog, Bailey.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 19, 2003 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa. Rev. Merle Mahnken officiated the service and graveside rites held at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Marlene Hight provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Michelle Ahrenholtz singing, "How Great Thou Art" and "The Lord's Prayer". The congregational hymns were "Amazing Grace How Sweet The Sound" and "Abide With Me". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were Heather Zeimen, Jodi Zeimen, Niki Zeimen and Kara Zeimen. Pallbearers were Dean Ahrenholtz, Jeff Ahrenholtz, Bruce Paulson, Brad Schultz, Dennis Teut and Dean Teut. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Ladies Aid.__________________________________________________________
Weed, Roberta Funeral services were held March 22, 2000 for Roberta "Bobbi" Ione Ernest, 87, of Ida Grove, Iowa, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove. The Revs. John Schauer, Michael Saylor and Eugene Ernst officiated with burial in Grant Township Cemetery in rural Schleswig. Pallbearers were her nephews, Edwin Schau, Ray H. and Jerry Ernst, Joe Weed, Merlin Rabe and Vernon King. Arrangements were under the direction of Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.
Mrs. Ernst died March 19, 2000 at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove of compliactions following a stroke.
Mrs. Ernst was born Nov. 29, 1912, in Charter Oak, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Anna (Lind) Weed. She graduated from Charter Oak Public Schools in 1930 and taught in a one-room schoolhouse near Charter Oak.
She married Ray C. Ernst Feb. 8, 1935, at Redeemer Lutheran Morningside Church in Sioux City. In the same year, she was confirmed at Redeemer by Pastor Otten.
The couple farmed near Hornick for eight years. In 1943, they moved to their farm south of Ida Grove. They retired from farming in 1975. He died in 1997 and she moved into an apartment in Ida Grove.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove since 1943. She held several offices in the Ladies Aid and was a member of the Anna Circle. She was past president of the Mapleton Zone LWML. For many years she was a member of the Grant Homemakers. She enjoyed bowling, playing bridge and gardening.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Lillie Pruehs, Hattie King and Ethel King; and two brothers, Cecil and Bernard Weed.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Duane and Ellen Ernst of Ida Grove; two grandsons, Erich of Des Moines and Gregor of Des Plaines, Ill.; and many nephews and nieces.__________________________________________________________

Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 2, at the United Methodist Church in Manilla, with the Rev. Sushil Joseph officiating. Organist was Barbara Agan and vocalist was Kay Rutherford.
Honorary casket bearwers were Donald Blom, Leonard Jones, Larry Birks and Dan Hansen. Burial under the direction of Ohde Funeral Home of Manning, including graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 132, Manilla and was in the Nishnabotna Cemetery in Manilla.
Mr. Younie is survived by his mother, Thelma Younie of Manilla; his wife, Madlyn Younie of Manilla; two children, Sandra and her husband, Don Nemitz, of Denison and Randall Younie and his wife, Pam, of Omaha, Neb.; three grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; a brother Donald Younie and his wife, Ruth, of Yankton, S.D.; and the following brothers and sisters-in-law, Audrey and LaVern Olsen of Manning; Pauline and George Graves of Manning; and Esther and George Alexander of Waterloo.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Mr. Younie was born May 2, 1921, in Hawarden, a son of Clifford and Thelma (Comstock) Younie. He attended school in Hawarden. The family moved to Manilla, where he graduated from Manilla High School in 1939.
He married Madlyn Cramer on Dec. 9, 1946, and they lived in Manilla most of their married life. He was employed by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul, and Pacific Railroad. He retired from the railroad in the 1970s.
He and his wife operated the Unity Cafe in Manilla. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.__________________________________________________________
Lass, Alfred Alfred George Lass, 90, of Sheldon, Iowa died Monday, February 26, 2001, at Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon.
Funeral services held Thursday, March 1, 2001 at United Methodist Church in Sheldon. Burial was in East Lawn Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 145 of Sheldon. Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Lass was born September 12, 1910, in Denison, Iowa, the son of John G. and Tillie (Nordholm) Lass. He attended Denison Public School and graduated in 1929. He was employed with a local department store until the late 1930s, when he moved to Sheldon. He was then employed with Starretts Department Store in the shoe and window dressing departments.
He served in the U.S. Army with the 90th Infantry Division Anti-Tank Unit, stationed in the European Theater during World War II. His awards and decorations include European-African Service Ribbon with a Silver Star, Bronze Service Arrowhead Medal, three Service Bars and a Service Stripe. Following his discharge in 1945, he returned to Sheldon.
He married Mildred Wilson on January 25, 1946, in Sheldon. He was employed with Railway Express Agency for nearly 30 years.
He was a member of United Methodist Church, where he served on the board; American Legion; Masonic Lodge of Sheldon, where he was a Past Master; Broken Column Lodge of Sibley, Iowa; Abu Bekr Shrine of Sioux City; Hospital Dads; Rainbow Dads; and Order of the Eastern Star. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and playing cards.
Survivors include a brother and his wife, Robert and Leanna of Cheney, Wash.; a brother-in-law and his wife, Bud and Rose Wilson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife and a sister, Abbie.__________________________________________________________
Riddle, Vesta
Denison Bulletin June 13, 1985Vesta Linder was born on Aug. 2, 1899 near Dow City the daughter of Robert and Mary Jane Bell Riddle. She died Tuesday Morning, June 4, 1985, at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, at the age of 85.
Vesta spent her early years of the family farm near Dow City. She received her formal education in the Dow City Community School. She graduated from the Dow City High school in 1917.
Vesta was united in marriage to Linn Linder. Together they made their home in DowCity community. Vesta was employed by the Western Light and Telephone Company in Dow City for fifty years. She made her home in Dow City until entering the Eventide Lutheran Home in 1982.
In addition to her parents and husband, Vesta was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and Willis, and two sisters, Stella and May.
Survivors include three nieces, Betty, Mrs. George Enright of Norwalk Calif; Angie, Mrs. Wayne Riddle of Des Moines and Kay, Mrs. Louis Riddle of Carroll. Also surviving is one nephew, Hugh Riddle of Detroit, Mich. as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, June 6, 1985, at 10:30 a.m. at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison. Interment was in the Dow City Cemetery. Vincent Argotsinger officiated at the services and graveside rites. Mrs. Fred Rabe served as organist for the services. Hymns included "How Great Thou Art" and "Beyond the Sunset."
Serving as pallbearers for the services were Thomas Houston, Francis Case, Edge Wright, Russell Brasel, Charles J. Smith and John Beam.

Kruse, Elva Elva Marten, age 81, of Loveland, Colorado, died Sunday, February 25, 2001, at McKee Medical Center in Loveland, Colorado.
Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison, Iowa, with Rev. Kurt R. Kaiser and Rev. David M. Sewing officiating. Burial was in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Denison, Iowa. Music for the service included "Rock of Ages", "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "Amazing Grace".
Elva Josephine Marten was born January 27, 1920 the daughter of Fred and Christine Bielfeldt Kruse at Denison, Iowa. She received her education in Denison and was graduated from Denison High School with the class of 1937. She was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism on July 18, 1920 by Rev. Wm. Frese at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and confirmed in her Christian Faith there on April 9, 1933.
On June 16, 1941, Elva was united in marriage to Raymond William Marten at St. Joseph, Missouri. They made their home in Mapleton where Elva was an active member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church serving as a Sunday School teacher, assistant Superintendent of Sunday School and worked faithfully with Vacation Bible School. While in Mapleton she worked at Farmer's Coop, Van's Ben Franklin, and Coast to Coast.
In 1964 Elva and Raymond moved to Loveland, Colorado. Elva was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and belonged to the Ladies Guild. Elva worked for J.C. Penney Company in Loveland, Colorado and Longmont, Colorado until her retirement in 1985.
Raymond died on September 2, 1989, and Elva continued to make her home in Loveland.
In addition to her parents, and husband Raymond, Elva was preceded in death by a sister, Inez Barnes, a brother, Vern Kruse and a nephew, Thomas Barnes.
Those who remain to cherish her memory include her sister, Irene Bohlmann of Denison, Iowa; nephew, Verdean Kruse and his wife, Linda of Ida Grove, Iowa; niece, Jean Warren and her husband, Delmar of Liberty, Missouri; brother-in-law, Bud Barnes of Denison, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Helen Wettengel of Texas, Alvera Probopiak of Florida, and Opal Kruse of Nebraska; grand-nephews, Carl Warren, Todd Kruse and Troy Kruse, other relatives and friends.

Eck, Fritz Fritzie (Fritz) Albert Eck was born August 22, 1922, the son of Fred and Bertha Goslar Eck. He died January 5, 2001 at the Eventide Lutheran Home at the age of seventy-nine.
Fritz was born on the family farm near Ricketts, Iowa, and was baptized in Christ as an infant and later confirmed on April 5, 1936 at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. He received his education in a rural school near his home and attended Lutheran school for two years. He graduated from the Charter Oak High School in 1940. After graduation, Fritz worked with his parents on the family farm, beginning his lifelong farming career. The Centennial Farm was bought by John Eck Sr. in 1891 and Fritz continued to farm the land until entering the Eventide Lutheran Home in 1996.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1953; his mother in 1984; and one brother, Alvin in 1978. He is survived by his siser, Marcella Hopp of Hudson, Wisconsin; three nephews, Brian Hopp and his wife, Mary of Beldenville, Wisconsin, Blaine Hopp and his wife, Sonia of Centerville, Minnesota and Bruce Hopp and his wife, Carrie of Woodville, Wisconsin; four nieces, Jane Bernecker and her husband, Jerry of Rice Lake, Wisconsin, Julie Schubert and her husband, Wolfram of River Falls, Wisconsin, Jeanine Hopp of Hudson, Wisconsin and Jacqueline Murphy and her husband, Brian of Hudson, Wisconsin; and many relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 7, 2001, at the St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. L.C. Sioux City Journal September 28, 1997DENISON, Iowa - Melvin Edward Gustafson, 67, of Kiron, Iowa died Thursday, Sept. 25, 1997, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Bethel Lutheran Church in Kiron. Burial will be in Kiron Cemetery. The Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Gustafson was born May 19, 1930, in Sac County, Iowa, the son of Richard and Minnie (Nelson) Gustafson. He was raised in the Kiron area where he attended school and graduated from Kiron High School in 1947. As a teenager he was employed at the Hardware and Electric Store.
He married Emeline Schultz on Sept. 8, 1951, in Kiron. The couple made their home in Kiron. They operated the Sundries store in Kiron until 1957 when he went to work in Schleswig at Hollander Motors until 1968. He also delivered Sioux City Journal bundles around to various towns for 18 years. In 1986 he was employed at Johnson Motors in Denison where he remained until retiring on Oct. 1, 1996.
He was a Lutheran and an active church member and served on the church council.
He served in the National Guard for nine years and served on flood duty at Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1950. He was mayor of Kiron from 1968 to 1973 and again from 1976 to 1983. He was on the fire department for over 20 years and served as fire chief for a time. He was president of the Community Club and Crawford County Conservation Board.
He enjoyed golfing and bowling.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Joel and Kim of Denison and Rick and Vicki of Ogden, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Cindy and Tracy Buck of Carroll, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Vernon and DeArliss Gustafson of Denison; a sister and her husband, MayDelle and John Hoefling of Rockford, Ill.

Memorial services were held June 18, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, the Rev. Kurt Kaiser and the Rev. Daniel Gifford officiated. Burial was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery. Huebner Funeral Home of Denison was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Muckey was born Aug. 11, 1956, in Denison, the daughter of John and Carol (Allen) Vore. She attended St. Rose of Lima School and Denison Community School, graduating from Denison High School in 1974. She was employed with Dubuque Pack and in 1977 with Farmland for eight years.
She married Thomas Muckey on July 2, 1983, in Denison.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She enjoyed reading, decorating and creating flower arrangements.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter and her husband, Andrea and Ryan Olson of Ames, Iowa; a stepdaughter, Jill Muckey of Smithland, Iowa; five sisters, Pat and her husband Dennis Krueger, Kathy Vore, all of Denison, Linda and her husband, Ed Brink of Arion, Iowa, Cindy and her husband, Dave Traufler of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Charlie and her husband, John Powell of Deloit, Iowa; her maternal grandmother, Roaletta Allen of Denison; and her mother-in-law, Marie Muckey of Mapleton, Iowa.

Sandstrom, Lester Winton
1936 newspaper clipping(beginning missing)...everyone as Lester had rallied following the accident that befell him on Thursday, July 9.
He had been injured internally when impaled by a pitchfork as he jumped from a bundle load on a farm where he was helping thresh. He was given the best of medical attention and was under the care of a trained nurse. He grew worse Sunday and Monday and on Tuesday his condition was noticeably for the better. He continued to improve Wednesday and to the middle afternoon on Thursday. At that time, however, he rapidly grew worse until the end. He was conscious all the time and and his beloved parents tenderly watched at his bedside during his illness. His only sister, Eleanor, was attending summer school in Ames, and word was sent her but she did not reach there before his going.
Lester Winton Sandstrom was the only son of Martin and Lillie Sandstrom and was born in Wheeler township, Sac County; March 14, 1917. He passed away July 16 at the age of 19 years, 4 months and two days. On June 7, 1917 he was baptized in the Bethel Lutheran church and confirmed in that church May 24, 1931. he was a faithful and loyal member up to the time of his death, being an active member of the Luther League.
He graduated from the Kiron high school with the class of 1934 and his athletic career began during his preparatory course when he won fame as a basketball player, holding the captaincy of the team that had one of the most successful seasons in the history of the school. Following his graduation he entered Drake university at Des Moines where he became famous for his part in football and basketball. He was one of three students who made the varsity football team in his sophomore year. April 3, 2003Bonnie J. Johnson, age 56, of Martinsburg, Nebraska, passed away Saturday, March 22, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 25, at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Martingsburg, Nebraska. Pastor Terry Kenitz officiated. Burial was in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in rural Martinsburg. A prayer service was held at 7:00 p.m. Monday at Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca, Nebraska.
Bonnie was born February 19, 1947, in Ute, Iowa, the daughter of Earl and Rosie (Kroll) Goslar. She graduated from Charter Oak High School in 1965. She attended Stewarts School of Hairstyling in Sioux City, Iowa and worked for several years as a hair dresser for Younkers. She married Earl Johnson on July 12, 1969 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, Iowa. The couple moved west of Martinsburg, Nebraska and farmed until 1997. The couple moved into Martinsburg in 2002. Bonnie enjoyed gardening, sewing, bird watching and entertaining her grandchildren.
Bonnie was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Martinsburg and the American Legion Auxiliary of Charter Oak, Iowa.
Survivors include her husband, Earl of Martinsburg, Nebraska; two daughters, Brenda and her husband, Paul Maibaum of Crofton, Nebraska and Marcy Johnson of Martinsburg, Nebraska; one son, James "Duke" and his wife, Kim Johnson of Allen, Nebraska; her mother, Rosie Goslar of Ute, Iowa; two brothers, Lester and his wife, Donna Goslar of Mapleton, Iowa and Melvin Goslar of Ute, Iowa; one sister, Karen and her husband, Ray Bathke of Dakota City, Nebraska; six grandchildren, many nieces and nephews.

Schwieso, Michael Lowell Michael L. "Mick" Schwieso, son of Albert and Madonna McMahon Schwieso, was born August 4, 1946, in Kittery, Maine. Mick's family lived in Chicago, Illinois where he attended kindergarten. The following year his family moved to Manilla, Iowa where he graduated with the Manilla High School Class of 1964. After his schooling Mick worked at a number of places, including Farmland, Manilla Fertilizer, Hy-Line, Omaha Cold Storage, Rocky's, Miller See, and Horizon Seed.
On April 30, 1977, Mick was united in marriage with Carleen Nieland at Sacred Heart Church in Manilla. Mick and Carleen made their home in Manilla. Mick was employed at Sucrosco Seed. Due to failing health, Mick retired in 2000. Mick was a member of Sacred Heart Church. He loved his dogs and cat and enjoyed participating with chat lines on the computer, hunting, fishing, gardening, music, photography, bowling, golfing and keeping the cars clean and waxed. Monday, July 23, 2001, Mick died at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, shortly after suffering a heart attack at his home. He was 54 years, 11 months and 19 days of age.
Mick was preceded in death by his parents. Hoefer, Helen Elizabeth "Betty" Laurens ... Betty Knoll, age 81, of Laurens, died Tuesday, November 5, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center in Laurens.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 11, at the United Methodist Church in Laurens, with the Rev. Tony Pulatie officiating. Graveside services were 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 11, at the Charter Oak Cemetery in Charter Oak.
Survivors include her daughters, Kay (Curtis) Larabell of Tempe, Arizona, and Jane (Keith) Freeman of Oceanside, California; grandchildren, Kelli Freeman and Scott Scholtz; and a sister Shirley Strickland of Cleveland, Tennessee. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sterling; grandson, David Scholtz, and a sister, Donna Steck.
Helen Elizabeth “Betty” Knoll was born February 10, 1921, at Battle Creek, Iowa. She was the daughter of Otto and Edna (Petersmeyer) Hoefer. She graduated from Charter Oak High School in 1939 and from Morningside College in Sioux City. On January 8, 1946, Betty married Sterling Knoll at Charter Oak. The couple lived in Humboldt, Battle Creek, and Laurens. Betty taught English, speech, and drama at Charter Oak, Albert City, and Rolfe. Sterling died in 1985.
Betty was a member of the United Methodist Church, U.M.W., and Eastern Star. She especially enjoyed drama and was active with the Laurens Community Theater.__________________________________________________________

Sunday, May 28, 2000Shawnee resident Mary Walters Addington died Saturday in a local nursing home. She was 83.
Mrs. Addington was born Aug. 25, 1916, in Dow City, Iowa, to William "Billy" and Amy Walters.
She graduated from Dow City High School and attended Wayne State University in Nebraska, where she received her bachelor's degree in math and science. Mrs. Addington trained as a medical technologist and was the head of the lab department at City Hospital and ACH Hospital in Shawnee.
She married Darwin (D.C.) Addington in Shawnee.
She was preceded in death by her husband, D.C. Addington; infant son, Darwin C. Addington Jr.; parents, Billy and Amy Walters; and a sister.
Survivors include her daughter, Linda Addington, Shawnee; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dean and Eleanor Walters, Indiana, and Wayne and Norma Walters, Iowa; a sister, Nellie Aho, Michigan; and many nieces and nephews.

Denison Review, Friday, January 25, 2002Phyllis N. (Rath) Smith was born on August 30, 1925 southwest of Buck Grove, Iowa in Washington Township to Rudolph and Bertha (Bertram) Rath. She died following surgery for an aneurysm on Wednesday, January 16, 2002 at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
Phyllis grew up in the Denison area where she graduated from high school with the class of 1943. Phyllis worked in Omaha and Denison.
She married Alfred W. Smith on March 19, 1946. They made their home in Carroll, Iowa where she continued to live after Al passed away on March 27, 1985. She became one of Jehovah's Witnesses, being baptized on October 15, 1983. She had a continuous part in community service work over the past 18 years. Phyllis was a good mother and homemaker, not working outside the home.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Jo Fulitans and husband David of Des Moines, Iowa; five sons: Thomas and wife Teresa of Burlington, Wisconsin; Alan of Nevada, Iowa; James, Richard, William and wife Carla all of Carroll, Iowa; three grandsons, Tommy, Barry and Ryan; two great grandsons; three brothers, Wilbur Rath of Wisconsin, Delmer Rath of Carroll, Wesley Rath of Denison, Iowa; a sister, Marcia Johnson of Denison, Iowa; other relatives and friends.
Memorial services were held at Kingdom Hall in Lake City, Iowa at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 19, 2002 with burial of the cremains at Carroll Cemetery in Carroll, Iowa.__________________________________________________________

Friday, July 25, 2003Kenneth Herbert Nemitz was born December 28, 1934, the son of August and Edna Neddermeyer Nemitz. He died Monday, July 14, 2003 on the family farm, near Charter Oak, Iowa at the age of sixty-eight.
Kenneth was born on the family farm, Hanover Township near Charter Oak. He was baptized in Christ, January 20, 1935 by Rev. H. M. Zagel, also on the family farm. He received his early education at St. Paul's Lutheran School, a rural school near his home and St. John Lutheran School in Charter Oak. He was confirmed on April 2, 1950 at St. John Lutheran Church, Charter Oak by Rev. Walter Schroeder. Kenneth continued his education at the Charter Oak High School graduating with the class of 1954. After competing his education he worked for the Charter Oak Implement and area farmers.
On June 26, 1955, Kenneth was united in marriage to Arlene Wellendorf at the Friedens Evangelical and Reformed Church in Schleswig, Iowa by Rev. Baumgartner. The couple made their home on the family farm in Hanover Township and were blessed with the birth of three children, Natalie, Debra and Pamela.
Kenneth was a devoted life long member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where he held various church offices, including Sunday School Superintendent, Elder, Trustee and presently President of St. Paul Congregation. He was also serving as Hanover Township Clerk. He was a very loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and brother who enjoyed spending time with his family, especially on the holidays, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas and displaying his lighted Christmas array. He was an avid farmer who also enjoyed nature, keeping the squirrels and the birds well fed. Kenneth loved woodworking, making things for his family and in later years made a Christmas gift for each of the Sunday School children at St. Paul. He enjoyed socializing with family and friends over coffee at the local coffee shop. In his leisure time, he enjoyed playing cards with his friends, attending antique auctions and collecting occupied Japan pieces. Kenneth was known for his great sense of humor.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, August and Edna Nemitz; his father-in-law, Harvey Wellendorf; his grandparents, Fred and Emma Nemitz and Marvin and Augusta Neddermeyer; also one nephew, Rodney Nemitz. Survivors include his wife, Arlene of Charter Oak; three daughters, Natalie Bohlmann and her husband, Dean of Charter Oak; Debra Sexton and her husband, Mick of Danbury; Pamela Claussen and her husband, Spencer of Schaller; five grandchildren, Brett and Derek Bohlmann, Brandi Sexton, Morgan and Hunter Claussen; his mother-in-law, Ruth Wellendorf of Schleswig; two brothers, Milfred Nemitz and his wife, Jeanette of Denison; August Nemitz, Jr. of St. Joseph, Missouri; a sister-in-law, Delores Nemitz of Kiron; two brothers-in-law, Dale Wellendorf and his wife, Sharon of Ida Grove; Brian Wellendorf and his wife, Tina of Ida Grove, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held at 1 P.M., Thursday, July 17, 2003 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Hanover Township, Charter Oak, Iowa. Rev. Eugene Ernst officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Hanover Township. Shirley Stull provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Eldon Hardekopf singing "Nearer, My God, to Thee" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and congregational hymns "Just as I Am, Without One Plea" and "Abide with Me! Fast Falls the Eventide." Honorary pallbearers were: Verdell Henningsen, Leonard Keating Jr., Hunter Claussen, Morgan Claussen, Edgar Kuhlmann, Gailen Meseck, Richard Spiegel, Richard Butler, Martin Spiegel, Mark Spiegel, Ken Lally and Jim Schultz. Pallbearers were: Derek Bohlmann, Shane Wellendorf, Brett Bohlmann, Brandi Sexton, Scott Nemitz and Ryan Nemitz. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Charter Oak was in charge of arrangements.__________________________________________________________

March 4, 2004Mervin M. Arnold, age 85 of Manilla, Iowa, died Thursday, February 26, 2004, at his home. Services were held 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 1 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manilla with Pastor Mark N. Mueller officiating. Burial was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Denison, Iowa. Bonnie Lorenzen was the organist for the service and music was "What A Friend We Have In Jesus", "Behold A Host Arrayed in White" and "How Great Thou Art".
Mervin M., son of Heinrich Otto and Katharina (Koos) Arnold was born March 21, 1918 on a farm nine miles south of Denison, Iowa. He was received into God's Kingdom of Grace through the sacrament of Holy Baptism at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison on July 21, 1918 by Reverend Frese. Mervin was confirmed in his Christian faith on March 29, 1931. He received his early education in country school, attended 7th and 8th grades at Zion's Parochial School and graduated from Denison Community High School in 1936. Following high school, Mervin farmed with his father on the family farm.
On May 28, 1939 he was united in marriage to Lucille Ruth Hansen at the Lutheran Parsonage in Walnut. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Sharlene. The couple continued farming on the family farm until Mervin was elected to the Crawford County Board of Supervisors in 1962. He served on the board through 1974. Due to his failing health the family moved to Denison in 1978 and later moved to Manilla.
Through the years, Mervin enjoyed many leisure activities, including card playing and traveling. He was a member of Zion Men's Club and an active participant in bowling, having bowled in four leagues and attended several state and national bowling tournaments. Mervin also enjoyed fishing and owned a cabin in Minnesota for 22 years.
Mervin was a loving husband, father and grandfather. His wife, Lucille passed away November 9, 1992. On February 18, 1996, Mervin was united in marriage to Loretta Petersen and they continued living in Manilla.
Preceding Mervin in death are his parents, wife Lucille and grandson-in-law Michael Friedrichsen.
Mervin is survived by his wife, Loretta; daughter Sharlene and husband Kenneth Hansen of Denison; three granddaughters, Marsha and husband, John Stoll of Mokena, Illinois, Michelle Friedrichsen of Odebolt and Marie Hansen of Council Bluffs; great-grandson, Dylan Friedrichsen; step-children, David Petersen of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Barb and husband, Greg Swanson of Loveland, Colorado; three step-grandsons, Nathan Swanson of Durango, Colorado, Nicholas Swanson of Loveland, Colorado and Max Petersen of Salt Lake City, Utah; other relatives and many friends.
Honorary casketbearers were Harold Olson, Jr., Dick Gross, Alvin Bandow, Junior Carstens, Joe Schiltz, Bill Rogge, Arlo Clausen, Dennis Rasmussen and Don Pedersen. Casketbearers were Phillip Blum, Harold Olson, Jr., Lynn Olson, Nyle Gruhn, Garry Gruhn and Mark Gruhn. April 1, 2004Leland "Lee" N. Roose, Bellevue, Washington, age 78, died of cancer on February 24, 2004 at the Evergreen Hospice Center, Kirkland, Washington.
Lee was born April 11, 1925 in Charter Oak, Iowa, son of Grace and Leland Roose. In 1942, he graduated from Charter Oak High School where he lettered in basketball and baseball, and played first clarinet in the high school band.
After high school, he attended Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa. In December 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and earned his wings as a Navy Pilot at Pensacola, Florida in February, 1946. After his discharge from the Navy he attended Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and the Deltairs Flying Club. He graduated from Iowa State in 1949, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
He worked in Chicago for Link Belt Company before moving to Seattle in 1952, where he worked for Western Gear, and then founded his own firm, representing heavy industrial equipment. From 1970 to 1976, Lee and his family transferred to Salt Lake City, Utah where he continued his business. In 1976, he and the family returned to Bellevue, where he retired.
Lee married Carol Grimm on October 15, 1955, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Carol's home.
Lee is survived by his wife, Carol of 48 years, and their three children, Eric Roose of Bellevue, Carrie Roose of Bend, Oregon, and Chuck Roose of Seattle, and his sister, Marilyn Roose Fraker of New Martinsville, West Virginia.
Lee was a member of the College Club of Seattle since 1952. He was an expert fisherman, having lead fishing expeditions for his family and friends to the waters of Washington and remote areas of British Columbia. He was also an enthusiastic skier, bird hunter and hiker. During his retirement he enjoyed traveling, reading, and especially spending time with his family, as well as hiking with his children and friends, and meeting daily with his very special "Kaffee Klatch" friends.
