Susan Miranda Herndon Lutes

Susan Miranda Herndon was born 2 October 1849 in Platte County, Missouri. She was daughter of Simeon Branham and Emmaline Miller Herndon. The family is found in 1870 in Weston Township, Platte County, Missouri: #424 Simeon Herndon, 53, farmer, born Ky; Emeline, 48, Ky; Miranda, 20, (occupation unreadable), Mo; Eliza, 14, at school, Mo; Joseph 17, (can’t read occupation) Mo; Wm, 12, at school, Mo; Emeline, 7, at school, Mo; Francis, 4, Mo. Photo of Susan Miranda in 1870.

Susan Miranda Herndon married Elias Pinkney Lutes 26 February 1871 in Platte County, Missouri. He was son of Joseph and Sarah Steele Lutes, born 25 December 1837 in Lumpkin County, Georgia. Elias Pinckney Lutes had a first wife, Sophronia Mayo, whom he married in 1860 (see information on this part of the family on the Sophronia Herndon Lutes page.) Elias Pinckney Lutes had served in the Civil War as a Confederate soldier and a copy of his record was obtained from Missouri and is attached below under Documents. Note that information is referenced as from a County History, a notoriously unreliable resource, but it is the only remaining record and we are lucky to have that.

The family is found in 1880 in Coldwater Township, Cass County, Missouri, southeast of Platte County: #25 E. P. Lutes, 41, farmer, born Ga, father Tn, mother Al; Miranda S., 30, born Mo, parents born Ky; Rebecca J. , 18, does housework, Mo, Ga, Mo; Nannie L, 16 attends school; Mary E., 13, attends school; Flora A., 6, attends school; Jessie E, 4, daughter; Sophronia, 2. By 1900 they are found in South Union Township, Benton County, Missouri, east of Cass County: #76 E. P. Lutes, head, born Dec 1837, age 61, married 40 yrs, Ga, parents born NC, farmer; Susan M., Oct 1849, age 50, married 40 yr(incorrect), born Mo, parents born Ky; Flora, Apr 1874, age 25, Mo, Ga, Mo, school teacher; Jessie, Oct 1876, 23; Safronia, Dec 1878, 21; Maggie, Jan 1881, 19; Joseph, July 1882, 17, farm laborer; Myrtle, Jan 1885, 15; William, Apr 1887, 13, farm laborer; Carrie, Nov 1889, 10; Louis, Oct 1892, 7. Family records (Ref 1) give Myrtle as the first child born in Benton County so the family moved between 1882 and 1885. Sophronia and Maggie were born in Cass County so the move there was before Dec 1878.

Elias P. Lutes filed application for homestead #13936 12-1-1890 at Boonville land office in Missouri. He was granted homestead certificate #6082 for lots 2 and 3 of the NE quarter of Section 4 in Township 39 north of range 20 West of the 5th principal meridian, 160 acres (in Benton County). In his homestead proof he describes the land as timber, brush, and farm land. First house built about 1885. Present dwelling built in 1894. Established residence in 1886. House is 16 x 32, four rooms, barn, field and orchard, worth $500. Self, wife and nine children living on homestead. Fifty acres under cultivation. In 1905 he received certificate #441131 for payment for 40 acres of land in the east half of lot 1, same section and township, so probably adjoining, so their property then totaled 200 acres. They are living here in 1910, Union Township, Benton County, Missouri: #120 Elias P. Lutes, head, 72, married 38 years, farmer, born Georgia, parents born North Carolina; Susan M., 59, married 38 yrs, 12 children born, 1 living (unfortunate error); Carrie C., 20, born Mo, father Georgia, mother Mo; Louis D, 17, helper on home farm.

Family records (Ref. 1) indicate that Elias Pinckney Lutes died in 1914 in Thomas County, Nebraska and that he is buried in the newly formed Lone Star Cemetery, across the county line in McPherson County. The family was still in Benton County in 1910, but son Louis, his mother Susan Miranda, and two of his sisters are found in Banner Township, Thomas County, Nebraska in 1920: #257 Louis D. Lutes, own, age 27, farmer, born Mo, father Ga, mother Mo; Susan M. Lutes, mother, 70, widow, Mo, parents born Ky; Susan M. Lutes, sister, 35, born Mo, father Ga, mother Mo; Carrie C. Lutes, sister, 30. Although the census says Louis owns the land it was owned by his mother.as she filed a homestead application and received title to Section 27 in Township 21 North, Range 29 West of the Sixth Principal Meridian, Nebraska, containing 640 acres on 14 February 1916. Family records erroneously carry this as filed by Elias Pinckney Lutes, but it definitely says Susan M. Lutes, widow of Elias P. Lutes. A copy can be seen at the Government Land Office Records site at http://www.glorecords.blm.gov. Susan Miranda Herndon Lutes died February 22, 1922 and is buried in the Lone Star Cemetery in McPherson County as is Elias.

Ancestry of Simeon Branham Herndon

Simeon Branham Herndon was son of Thomas Herndon,Jr., born 1794 in Virginia and died 11 February 1864 in Atchison County, Kansas. He married Mary Branham in Fayette County, Kentucky (record not available). She was born 1797 in Kentucky and died 11 June 1863 in Atchison County, Kansas.

Thomas Herndon, Jr., was son of Thomas Herndon,Sr., born 1765 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia and died 1808 in Fayette County, Kentucky. He married Susannah Beverley Stubblefield in Spotsylvania County, Virginia about 1786. She died before 1839 in Fayette County, Kentucky. (Note: Your Web Master has proven one of her DAR memberships through this line as of 2008)

Thomas Herndon, Sr. was son of Edward Herndon III, born 5 May 1730 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia and died 3 Sep 1799 in Spotslylvania County, Virginia. He married about 1755 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, to Mary Duerson.

Edward Herndon, III, was son of Edward Herndon, Jr., born about 1702 in King and Queen County, Virginia, and died before Nov 1759 in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. He married about 1727 in King and Queen County, Virginia to Elizabeth Stubblefield who died before March 1749/50.

Edward Herndon Jr., was son of Edward Herndon, Sr., born 1678 in New Kent, Co, Virginia, and died 1758 in Caroline County, Virginia. He married in 1698 to Mary Waller, born 23 May 1674 in Newport Pagnell, Bucks, England, and died about 1720.

Edward Herndon, Sr., was carried for years in Herndon genealogies as the son of William Herndon who purportedly married Catharine Diggs, daughter of Edward Digges, governor of Virginia. Your Web Master has examined all 213 web sites on line carrying the marriage to Catharine Digges. All seem to eventually lead back to the same source: Dr. John Herndon who wrote of the family in 1947. What most of the sites do not do is mention that the marriage to Catharine is not proven and there is only circumstantial evidence that she was daughter of Governor Edward Digges as Edward Digges did not mention the full names of his children in his will. In 1992, Lloyd Bockstruck, a respected genealogist who writes a column in the Dallas newspaper stated that it has been definitvely proven that these Herndon families are not descended from Governor Edward Digges.

We have much detailed information on the Herndon family but are keeping it short here. If you have any questions email Web Master Nadine at the site given below. Nadine has obtained additional DAR membership based on her ancestry for both Thomas Herndon and his wife Susan Beverley Stubblefield as both had ancestors who served in the Revolutionary War.

On this page we trace the direct Herndon ancestry of Sophronia Herndon Lutes. We have much more information on the Herndon Family. It is interesting to note that Sophronia was 2nd cousin 3 times removed to William Lewis Herndon, Captain of the ship Central America which sank on return from the gold fields in California and was much in the news in the 1990‘s when the wreck of the ship and its treasure was located. She was also 3rd cousin 3 times removed to William Henry Herndon, Abe Lincoln‘s law partner.

This page was created April 8, 2007. It was updated June 3, 2007 with the family and ancestors of Simeon Branham Herndon and the cemetery photos of Simeon's grandson and namesake. It was updated again in December 2008 to try to clarify a previous statement about the marriage of William Herndon to Catharine Digges. The correct statement would have been that it has been proven that our Herndons were not descendants of Governor Edward Digges of Virginia.
