The Last Will and Testament of Jacob Coffin, Deerfield, Oneida, NY 1860

Jacob's will was proved on 30 Oct 1860 before Henry Buchard, Esq. Surrogate, stating in part, "for the purpose of proving and recording the last will and testament of Jacob Coffin, late of the town of Deerfield, deceased..."

In the name of God, Amen. I, Jacob Coffin, of the town of Deerfield in the County Oneida and State of New York, of the age of Seventy-five years and being of sound mind & memory, do make, publish, and declare this my last will and testament in manner following, that is to say:
First, it is my will that all my just debts be paid out of my estate, and all my funeral charges to be paid, and that my executor cause to be erected at my grave a suitable tombstone.
Secondly, I will and bequeath unto my son Worden Coffin all my real and personal property of every name and nature by his paying the following legacies hereinafter named.
Thirdly, I will and bequeath unto my daughter Ann Eliza Wait the sum of five hundred and fifty dollars, to be paid to her in twelve years from and after my death without interest.
Fourthly, I will and bequeath unto my daughter Pharsina Willard the sum of three hundred and fifty dollars, to be paid in twelve years from and after my death without interest.
Fifthly, I will and bequeath unto my son Allen T. Coffin the sum of five dollars in one year from and after death.
Sixthly, I will and bequeath unto my son Isaac Coffin the sum of twenty-five dollars in one year from & after my death.
Seventhly, I will and bequeath unto my son Benjamin Franklin Coffin the sum of two hundred seventy-six dollars in four years from and after my death without interest.
Eighthly, I will and bequeath unto my son Jacob Coffin the sum of five dollars, to be paid in one year from and after my death.
Ninthly, I will and bequeath unto my granddaughter Helen Perciville the sum of one hundred dollars in four years from and after my death without interest.
Tenthly, I will and direct that the above legacies are to be paid by my son Worden Coffin as above specified.
I hereby constitute and appoint my trusty friend Alansing Barney the executor of this, my last will and testament, hereby revoking former wills by me made.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this sixth day of February, 1860.

Petition for Probate

In the Matter of Proving the Last Will and Testament of Jacob Coffin, Deceased

To Henry Buchard, Esquire, Surrogate of the County of Oneida.

The petition of Alansing Barney, the executor named in the last will and testament of Jacob Coffin late of the town of Deerfield in the County of Oneida, and State of New York, deceased, respectfully showeth that the said Jacob Coffin died on or about the 1 day of June, 1860, at the town of Deerfield in the County of Oneida aforesaid, which was the place of his residence at the time of his death; that the instrument now presented and shown to your petitioner purporting to be the last will and testament of the said deceased, and bearing date upon the 6th day of February, 1860, your petitioner verily believes to be such last will and testament; that the said instrument purporting to be such last will and testament relates to both real and personal estate, that the same was delivered by the testator to your petitioner who has kept the same in his possession from and after the time he so received the same as aforesaid, until this day, and until he delivered the same to the Surrogate of the county of Oneida for Probate.

And your petitioner further shows that the deceased left no widow and left the following children, viz:

Worden R. Coffin of Deerfield, aforesaid.
Allen T. Coffin of Deerfield, aforesaid.
Anna Eliza Wait, wife of Thomas B. Wait of Canton, St. Lawrence Co., N.Y.
Franklin B. Coffin of Canton, St. Lawrence Co., N.Y.
Pharsina Willard, wife of Henry T. Willard of Picton in the Province of Upper Canada.
Jacob Coffin of Picton aforesaid.
Isaac Coffin of Oshkosh, Wisconsin
who are all of full age, (The real and personal estate will not exceed the sum of $4000.00 in value.) and who are all the only heirs at law and next of kin of said deceased.

Your petitioner therefore prays that a citation may issue to the heirs at law, next of kin to the said deceased requiring them to appear before the said Surrogate in his office in Utica in the county od Oneida aforesaid, on the 28 day of August, 1860, at 10 o'clock in the forenoon of that day, to attend the Probate of the said last will and testament according to the form of the statutes of the State of New York, in such case made and provided.
